When public television's fifth annual American Graduate Day hits airwaves in September, Rotary will be recognized for its work mentoring young people and keeping high school students on track to graduate. Representatives from Monarch School, an elementary and high school for San Diego's homeless youths, will talk about the school's long-running relationship with the Rotary Club of San Diego, California, USA. The school started as an education center in one modest room in 1987. By 1998 it was in danger of losing its lease amid a wave of redevelopment in San Diego's urban core. A local Rotary...

The Rotary Foundation has received the highest possible score from Charity Navigator, an independent evaluator of charities in the U.S. In the most recent ratings, released on 1 September, The Rotary Foundation earned the maximum 100 points for both financial health and accountability and transparency. The ratings reflect how efficiently Charity Navigator believes the Foundation will use donations, how well it has sustained programs and services, and its level of commitment to good governance and openness. In the previous rating, the Foundation had received 97 points.

Each month, eBay, the world’s largest auction website, selects a set of upcoming Live Auction events and donates a portion of all sales proceeds to Rotary. Only U.S. auction sales are eligible. See the schedule of September auctions.

Club Meeting 14th September 2016
Again a busy week in the life of the Rotary Club of Berwick.  It is always a special night when the District Governor comes to visit, but even more so when they are a Past President of our own club.  Welcome to Lynne and Trevor Westland.  Also welcome to AG Alan Collier

Di Double toasted Rotary International.  She said how she is proud to be Australian and a Rotarian.  An organisation that is over 110 years old, that has ever widening ripples over 200 countries and areas, 34000 Rotary Clubs and 1.2 million members is an achievement.  Congratulations go to a large global family that is improving the lives of many, including our own families.

Trevor Bailey has brochures are available to put in holders in local businesses.  The current ones have nearly run out so new ones are being printed.  Please see him if you can help.

Viv and Jim Armstrong handed over information about the Mental Health Forum to the RC Narre Warren.  They are running it on the 15th March 2017.  The first mental health first aid course is nearly ready to go.  Hat day for "Lifting the Lid on Mental Health is coming up soon.  Watch this space.

District Governor Lynne Westland
DG Lynne opened her talk by saying she feels like she has come home.  She joined the RC Berwick in 1999 and was President in 2008-9. Other responsibilities include leading a GSE team to Denmark, an Interplast Tour to Fiji, Chair of District Youth Exchange and Chair of RYPEN for 1 year.  She is now a member of the Rotary Club of Casey.

Lynne has been married to Trevor for 43 years have 6 children and 9.85 grandchildren.  For 23 years Lynne has worked for Tobin Brothers Funeral Directors, who have been very supportive of her Rotary life.  She is also a Marriage Celebrant, Justice of the Peace and Bail Justice.  Lynne herself joined Rotary for business, stayed for friendships and the opportunity to serve and make a difference.

Rotary was once all about clubs but now it is much wider.  There is definitely a buzz around the District with 50 clubs who are doing amazing things in their community.  The individuals in the clubs are those who are making the difference, but working together we can do so much more.   Dedicated hard working people such as the RC Berwick, get on with the job.

A new E Club has been charted “Latitude 38” with a celebration coming in November.   Some clubs are looking to merge.  There are 5 members of Berwick that are on District committees.   The District committees of ROMAC, Australian Rotary Health and Youth Exchange are looking for members.  It is a great way of seeing how District works, please contact Lynne if you are interested.    RYPEN has 3 clubs looking to taking it over.

RI President John F Germ has relaxed rules of Rotary.  He has given permission to dare to be different.  Clubs can change things like meeting times and structure.  The attendance rules are less strict.  Lynne’s goal is to have each club in the district to increase membership by 1.

In this 100 years of Foundation, Lynne encouraged every member do donate at least $26.50.  This was the first donation to a school for crippled children 100 years ago.

Foundation’s goal is still to eradicate polio.  Sadly Nigeria has now had 3 new cases diagnosed.  Not everyone has completed the immunisation course due to wars and movement of people.  We can’t be complacent even though it has taken so long to completely eradicate it.

The Conference to be held in Hobart next year has a great range of speakers who will both inspire and entertain us.  The theme is “Children are our Future”.  A trip to the Salamanca Market on Saturday morning is planned along with the golf day and tours to MONA and Port Arthur.   The Governors Ball will have us dancing to the Blues Brothers.  She encouraged us all to attend along with the International Convention next year.

Lynne said that we are kicking goals and we should be proud of our club.  She thanked us for our commitment to Rotary.  She particularly thanked President Mark and members of the board who kept her up to date of what is happening in our club.  Together we achieve more.
Wheel Chairs for Kids
For the DG Partners project, Trevor Westland has nominated Wheel Chairs for Kids.  Adjustable wheel chairs are made in Western Australia and then distributed to areas mainly in South East Asia.  Locals are trained on how to fit and maintain the chairs.  This very worthy project not only helps the children but the whole family.

President Mark presented a cheque for a wheelchair with a neck brace and table attached.

How Long did the DG Talk For ???
A tradition with our club when the District Governor visits is to guess how long they speak for.  A gold coin donation gains you an entry.  Julie Allgood guessed 24 minutes and 35 sec.  The actual time was 24min 39 sec.  She took home $47.00 for her efforts.

Caroline Chisholm Education Foundation
President Mark and Isobel went to the thank you evening for The Caroline Chisholm Education Foundation.  It is to help students in financial hardship receive a high quality, vocational educational qualification, at Chisholm TAFE.  The club has been a sponsor for a number of years.  A fantastic night celebrating students who have been sponsored to attend the Chisholm TAFE.  The students were very appreciative.  Many said that they would not be able to study if they had not been sponsored.
Art Screens
Gary Cooper doing a great job with the art screens while Laury is away.  The latest is at Nossal High School .
Lisa's Week
Lisa went to the city on the train for the first time by herself to meet inbound and outbound students from our own and other districts.  They had a great time looking around the city.  She is looking forward to the school holidays.
The word for the week is “Ferien” which means holidays.
