When Teguest Yilma helped found the Rotary Club of Addis Ababa Entoto in 2002, she thought polio had already been eradicated from most of the world. But while Ethiopia had been free of the disease, Yilma was shocked to learn that new cases had started cropping up in surrounding countries such as Somalia. “I was thinking, it’s not possible, we can’t be free if the countries around us are not free,” she says. Yilma, the managing editor of Capital, Ethiopia’s largest English weekly newspaper, has brought a journalist’s skills to the fight against polio. She became vice chair of the Ethiopia...

Battling breast cancer in 2000, Kathryn Smith found comfort pursuing her lifelong interest in Franklin D. Roosevelt. The more she read, the more intrigued she became with the 32nd U.S. president’s private secretary, Marguerite Alice “Missy” LeHand. “I thought, what a fascinating life she had because she was by his side through the polio crisis, establishing the polio rehabilitation center in Warm Springs and then after his return to politics,” she says. Smith, a past president of the Rotary Club of Greater Anderson, S.C., and a longtime newspaper journalist, turned that curiosity into a book...

The Atlanta Host Organization Committee is offering some good old-fashioned Southern hospitality at the Rotary International Convention from 10 to 14 June. It has planned a wide range of activities featuring everything from good food and music to inspiring tours of local landmarks. If it’s your first convention, these events are chances to meet fellow Rotarians from around the world, and if you’re an experienced convention goer, you can catch up with old friends. Hall of Fame baseball player Hank Aaron will host Rotarians for a “Strike Out Polio” night at the new SunTrust Park, where you’ll...

One of United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s earliest memories is of fleeing with his family into the mountains during the Korean War, his village burning behind him. His father and grandfather had to forage for food in the woods; his mother gave birth to his siblings away from anything remotely resembling a health facility. “I have known hunger,” he says. “I have known war, and I have known what it means to be forced to flee conflict.” The soldiers who came to their rescue were flying the blue flag of the United Nations. The UN provided them with food and their schools with books....

Australia Day
What a magnificent day we had at Pioneers Park in Berwick for Australia Day.  All the planning and hard but enjoyable work on the day paid off.  The weather was kind to us and the many families that enjoyed the festivities.

It goes to show that everyone working as a team can get things done.  We looked like a team in our shirts and hopefully got the Rotary message out to the community.

Thanks to Peter Mangan for his initial planning and then Ricardo Balancy for taking over in the final stages.

This letter is from Ricardo:

Dear Rotarians and friends

On behalf of the Australia Day Committee and the Board of Management I would like to convey my deepest appreciation and most sincere thank you to all members and volunteers who contributed their time and effort in assisting the RCB deliver yet another successful Australia Day event for the community.

Without the support and commitment of individuals working as one, we would not have been able to achieve this success.

However small or big the role you played on the day, rest assured that you made a difference.

I hope that you also got to enjoy the day.

 Thank you,
 PE Ricardo Balancy
On behalf of the Australia Day 2017 Committee

Farmers & Craft Market
Another good market.  January is traditionally our weakest of the year as it occurs too close to Australia Day which normally forms part of a long weekend for most people.
Many people use this time as their last chance to relax away before returning to work or picking up the kids before they return to school.

The gate takings were $1,179.15 which is up from last year.  Most stall holders were happy including our new ones.

Well done to Terry Carmichael and the team for another good market.

Next Week's Meeting
This coming week is a Club Service meeting.  This is your chance to have a say about our club.

This week we will review the club strategy as part of the program.
The update from November will be emailed to members separately.

Feedback would be appreciated, positive or negative does not matter, as it is the members strategy not just the board’s or one person’s.

Golf Day.........Save the Date
We are holding a golf day. On Friday 5th May. Please mark your diary now.
Gourmet BBQ at 1200 Noon, with dinner at 6 PM.

Our major beneficiary is St. John of God Hospital Cancer and Cardio Care. This will be the RCB meeting for the week.

We need all Rotarians to consider finding items from donors outside the club, for prizes, raffles and auctions.
We need commitments of major items of value urgently so we can print raffle tickets well in advance of the event.
Also talk to potential golfers and sponsors and ask them to reserve the date.

Brochure and Application forms available soon.

Please let Golf Day Chair Mick know ASAP if you can source items.
