STOP THE PRESS - SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

The halls have been decked out and Rotarians and guests are invited to come celebrate "Christmas in July" at our Club meeting on Wednesday the 26th, courtesy of Khans Catering!! We'll enjoy a special Christmas menu with all the trimmings!!

Meeting - July 19, 2017

Acting Sergeant PP Terry Carmichael called members to order at 7pm, for the singing of the National Anthem.

Graham Johnstone, our Club Protection officer, was invited to provide his Safety briefing.  Graham said that he will be contacting members whose Working with Children Checks will expire later this year to make sure they were being renewed. Graham reiterated that it is critical that the checks be kept current for insurance purposes, as the Club is engaged in many activities involving young people.

Ricardo’s chat
Ricardo welcomed all members, especially those who have returned from their holidays. He also warmly welcomed the guests of Rotarians including Cheryl Zuhlsdorff, Di Scheepers’ sister, and David Cutler who was invited by the Past Presidents (PP) Viv and Jim Armstrong.
Ricardo also mentioned that the Board held its first meeting on Monday the 17th, and that more information would be included in the Secretary’s report.

Robotics for Primary Students

District Grant approved for Berwick Fields Primary School.

Berwick Fields Primary School were looking for support to bring a practical hands on element to their Coding program at the school. They wanted to purchase three Lego Mindstorms EV3 kits so that the children could test their coding on real life robots which they could build themselves. This was to help develop a more well-rounded STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) curriculum.

Total cost was $1860.00  The Rotary Club of Berwick put in a District Grant for this project and was successful. District will put in half while the club puts in the other half.

The school now has enough support from within the school and other organizations to buy 14 of these kits. Although it might take a little while for the kids to master their new craft, we look forward to having a group of little "coding wiz" come to our club in due course, to show off their new skills. We will also arrange a small excursion to the school to see how the coding and robotics program is being integrated in the classroom.

Behind the Badge - Rob Wingrave

Chairman Bob introduced fellow Rotarian Rob Wingrave for his “Behind the Badge” presentation.

The “Behind the Badge” presentation gives members the opportunity to hear about the life of their fellow Rotarians beyond Rotary, their diverse and interesting journeys that have lead them to a life of “service above self” in Rotary.

Rob began by recounting his life as a child in Preston, with his parents and five siblings.  “I was born the eldest of 6 children – 3 boys and 3 girls.  My mother was very proud with 3 boys and 3 girls and 16 grandchildren.  His family lived in Preston and went to the same school his mother went to and then revealed one of the children was Clare Carmichael – Terry’s wife.”

In 1968 the family moved to “the sticks” in East Bentleigh, which in those days was surrounded by market gardens. Rob left school after completing Year 4, and wanted to be a Chef or Pastry Cook, but his father wouldn’t permit that. Rob’s father decided that the boys would go and learn a trade and that the girls would go to a Convent. Rob wanted to be a carpenter rather than an electrician, and ended up an apprenticeship carpenter.  His first day on the job with a local builder was quite eventful as he somehow managed to fall off the roof.  He was out of action for a couple of months and knew then that he had to find another line of work. He ended up in joinery and enjoyed working on windows and then shop fitting.

JOKER'S WILD FUNDRAISING

While some clubs raise funds at meetings from selling raffle tickets, the Rotary Club of Berwick holds what is known as a Joker’s Wild session. All members in attendance are invited to participate, for a small fee, in the Joker's Wild session at each meeting for a chance to win a cash jackpot by drawing the "Joker" from a deck of cards. Each week the member with the winning ticket has the opportunity to draw one card from the deck. The jackpot increases if the Joker is not drawn and the number of cards in the deck reduces after each draw, thus increasing the chance of winning the jackpot at the next draw.

The current Jackpot is $1025.75, and David Button had the winning ticket but did not find the Joker.  Although David was disappointed, the members in attendance rejoiced at the prospect of being in with a chance to win the next (larger) jackpot. Joker's Wild is a fun session and members look forward to walk away with the jackpot each week!! Good luck all for next week.
