Club Meeting 31st August 2016

It’s always a special night when we have an induction or a Youth Exchange Presentation.  This meeting we had both.

We were honoured to have members and partners of the RC Ringwood as guests to join us as President Mark inducted David Collyer into our club.

Prior to being inducted, PP Roger Daniels from RC Ringwood presented a certificate of service to David.  It cited that David has a double PHF, been President twice and served with distinction for 28 years 3 months. He has served on numerous committees particularly membership.  His wife Rosemary is great supporter of both David and RC Ringwood.

This shows that he is very well respected with in the RC Ringwood.  They are sad to see him go but we are very privileged to have David choose our club to join.

David spoke of when he moved to Berwick he had a choice of 3 clubs in the area.  We were the first club he visited and was struck by the fellowship, camaraderie and the welcome he received.  Welcome David, we hope you enjoy your time with us and we are pleased that you chose us to be your new Rotary home.
Lisa Bayer Youth Exchange Presentation
We had the pleasure of learning a bit more about our lovely exchange student Lisa Bayer from Germany.

She is 16 years old and comes from Jever, a small village in North Germany close to the North Sea.  She has an older brother and younger sister.  Dad is a Dentist and Mum runs his office.

Lisa’s sponsor club is the RC of Wilhelmshaven-Friesland.  They have 2 outbound students this year.

On weekends they sail on their boat to the east northern islands. She likes to play volleyball, tennis, do gymnastics, dance ballet, read books and meet friends.

We learnt about Oktoberfest, breweries, sauerkraut, sausages, schnitzel and Dirndls.
School is very different here to Germany.  It is much easier going.  There is a better relationship with the teachers.  Here there are fun subjects like Outdoor Education.  In Germany it is much more serious.  She is looking forward to going on the tours while she is with us.

We also learnt things that are Not True in Germany,
Not everyone eats only sausages and drinks beer
They don’t wear socks with sandals.
Not everyone goes hiking.
Germans can make small talk.
Not everyone loves soccer.

Lisa’s Councillor PP Viv gave a vote of thanks saying that Lisa most enjoyable person to be around, has so many wonderful qualities and such good manners.

We still need another host family.  Now that you have met Lisa and heard how lovely she is, please give serious thought of how you can have Lisa become part of your family.

Farmers & Craft Market
Terry reported on the Farmers Market & Craft Market, the first one that Terry and Trevor have been in charge.

He thanked everyone for their huge support on the day.

We had 42 stall holders, with 6 new and returning stalls.  We need to get customer base up.  Advertising with other Rotary Clubs will be done and Facebook expanded.

A special mention to Andy and Trevor who spent considerable time and effort pulling out cars that had been bogged.

Make Ups
Jenny attended the combined Alice Springs Clubs Henley on Todd Regatta.
Isobel the RC Cairns North,
