FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DESK - 4 OCTOBER 2017
On Wednesday we were honoured to welcome District Governor (DG) Don Ripper on his first visit to the Club since the Changeover in June. DG Don was accompanied by his wife Jude, and his trusted assistant Allan Collier (Assistant Governor).

Other visitors on what was a truly special occasion were PP Robert Ong and his wife Irene from Rotary Club of Sitiawan – District 3300 Malaysia, Pat Edwards, Joy Kusters, Jean Mawhinney, Lisemay Balancy, Dawn Newby, Chris Newby, Cait Langdon, Gary Castricum, Grace Karon, Gaetano Fina, and David Cutler.

Prior to the meeting Don and Allan spent an hour with the Board reviewing and discussing plans, strategies, opportunities and achievements. Overall DG Don gave the Board a resounding tick of approval and pronounced himself satisfied that we have the right strategies in place to achieve the Club, District and Rotary International objectives for the coming year.

Most importantly the Club continues to review its long term strategic plan, making adjustments as required to maintain relevance and to ensure that the club is able to keep pace with the times. The opportunities to leverage the tools and processes that Rotary International has developed to assist Club strengthen, develop and grow membership were discussed as well as what it means to be one of the largest clubs in the District.

DISTRICT GOVERNOR'S OFFICIAL VISIT
The District Governor’s Address
DG Don Ripper began his address by asking “what does it mean to be a Rotarian”. This is a question members are often asked in conversations with people thinking about becoming Rotarians. It’s the sort of question Don believes a Rotarian should like to be asked, and it is likely that the response will be drawn from the Rotarian’s own personal experiences as a member of a Rotary Club.

Don went on to share his own thoughts on what it means to be a Rotarian in today’s society.
A Rotarian believes in Rotary and what Rotary stands for. What Rotary stands for is stated in the Objects of Rotary and above all Rotarians believe in Service above Self. Being a Rotarian means having the opportunity to experience the warm fellowship of Rotary Clubs which can greatly expand one’s circle of acquaintances. Being a Rotarian means being actively involved in the affairs and the service of projects in your club and Rotarians always look to get involved. Rotarians demonstrate the strength of their commitment to Rotary in the service that they bring to their club. Being a Rotarian is a way of life. It can be a satisfying lifelong adventure for those who are willing to give themselves to and enjoy the benefits from all that Rotary has to offer.

THE COFFEE'S ON US!
On Wednesday October 4 – Cheryl Zuhlsdorff and I (Sandi Tarant) went to Fountain Gate
shopping centre to experience ‘Coffee with a Cop’.  I noticed it on Facebook and shared it on my FB page and Cheryl saw it.  We had a great time having a cup of coffee with First Constable Trent Parker.  I was interested in how this event came about and Trent gave me a card with the name Laura Carter and her email address.
The following is the story that Laura Carter gave me. It is interesting.

The Coffee’s On Us!
Coffee with a Cop originated in the United States in 2011 and we brought it to Victoria and Australia in 2015, hosting the first event at Endeavour Hills Shopping Centre. Since then, the program has been established across Casey, Cardinia and Greater Dandenong.

We now run monthly events with the support of local shopping centres.

Book Drive…
A huge THANK YOU to all those who have contributed to the Rotary Club of Berwick’s “Book Drive” as part of the Literacy and Education month in September. We have collected over 200 books to date, and we will have a final collect on Wednesday the 11th of October following which the books will be donated to kids in our local community who might have never had the opportunity of owning their own book.

Australian Rotary Health – “Lift the Lid on Mental Illness” awareness campaign…
Volunteers are invited to attend the Rotary kiosk at Bunnings in Fountain Gate on the weekend of 7-8th October between 10am to 5pm, to help with the “Lift the Lid on Mental Illness” awareness campaign.
Donations can be made via australianrotaryhealth.org.au.

JOKER'S WILD
The Jackpot was $1,559.75 this week.

Guest Jude Ripper, wife of DG Don Ripper, drew the ticket for Jokers' Wild
Betty Tudge had the ticket needed to try to choose the Joker and win the Jackpot.

Unfortunately Betty took the 10 of Clubs from the deck.

Everyone cheered when they saw the Joker was still in the deck.
There are 25 cards remaining.

Joker's Wild is a fun session and members look forward to walking away with
the jackpot each week!!   Good luck all for next meeting when we have Joker's Wild.
