FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DESK - 7.02.2018
Welcome to the 28th Edition of the Spoke ‘n’ Words.

It’s hard to believe that seven months has already passed since receiving the President’s reins from Past president Mark Caulfield. And in just 20 weeks I will be handing over the reins to President Elect (PE) Lea Paton at the customary Changeover dinner. Where did the time go? I have thoroughly enjoyed my first seven months and the Board and I look forward to continuing the work commenced by our predecessors 57 years ago to build a vibrant and enduring Club that is responsive to the evolving needs of the community within which it evolves.

El Camino de Santiago (The Way of St James) Walk
Isobel and PP Mark Caulfield went on this walk recently and took all those present on their Walk.
Here is Isobel's account of this adventure for us all to share.

We walked the French way or the Camino Frances. Started in Saint Jean Pied De Port in France and finished in Santiago De Compostela in Spain.

This Wikipedia link has info about St James.  You can pick out things from this.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camino_de_Santiago

ROTARY THEME FOR FEBRUARY - PROMOTING PEACE IN THE WORLD

Conflict and violence displace millions of people each year. Half of those killed in conflict are children, and 90 percent are civilians.

We refuse to accept conflict as a way of life. Rotary projects provide training that fosters understanding and provides communities with the skills to resolve conflicts.

RC OF BERWICK KICKING GOALS FOR MENTAL HEALTH
A little while ago, the Rotary Club of Berwick applied for a second District Grant of $1000 to train Scout Leaders in Mental Health First Aid. This Grant was approved just before Christmas. The Club has also put a further $2000 (the Club must match at least what is applied for through District) and now the project is live.
Viv Armstrong is running this Grant and has done all the legwork. Viv is so excited by what she has negotiated; she would like to share the progress with every member of the Club.   Here is Viv's report:

1. Along with our $1000 grant from District, we have $2000 from the club to go towards training scout leaders in MHFA (Mental Health First Aid).

 2. We have negotiated with Annmarie Bayard to train 18 Scout leaders.

JOKER'S WILD
Joker's Wild this week had many Rotarians more than interested in buying into this draw.
Lisemay was invited to pick the winning ticket from the black bag.
Gaetano Fina held that ticket and decided to take the top card off the deck of 18 cards offered to him.

It was the Ace of Clubs.  The Joker was quite a few cards later as it turned out.  But $10 for his
trouble isn't too bad.  Next week the jackpot is sitting at  $2109.25.  With only 17 cards left in the deck, chances are the jackpot will go off VERY soon.

Make sure to grab your tickets from Sandi before the start of the meeting. As the saying goes... "You've got to be in it to win it!"  Good Luck!!!
