The World Health Organization has confirmed two cases of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) in Nigeria, the first cases in the country since July 2014. After passing a year without a case of the wild poliovirus, Nigeria was removed from the list of polio-endemic countries in September 2015. These cases – from two local government areas of Borno state – occurred in July 2016. The Government of Nigeria – in partnership with the Global Polio Eradication Initiative – will take immediate steps to respond quickly to the outbreak to prevent further spread of the disease. This response will include...

Each month, eBay, the world’s largest auction website, selects a set of upcoming Live Auction events and donates a portion of all sales proceeds to Rotary. Only U.S. auction sales are eligible. See the schedule of August auctions.

From the August 2016 issue of The Rotarian Four hundred years ago, the invention of the microscope gave us a glimpse into an aspect of the world too tiny to be seen by the human eye. The microscope works by capturing light shone on or through an object observed through lenses, which magnify the resulting image so we can see it. But a microscope has its limits. In 1873, German physicist Ernst Abbe discovered that the ability of a microscope to see past a certain size was limited not by the quality of its lens, but by the wavelength of light shining into it. And since the wavelength of visible...

From the August 2016 issue of The Rotarian Quilts may be utilitarian objects, but Rod Buffington’s “quilt paintings” – watercolors on paper that are then covered with small bits of fabric – are geometrics where mathematics and whimsy intersect. Buffington, a member of the Rotary Club of Springfield, Ill., didn’t come up with this unusual method overnight. His voilà moment came as he beheld the mesmerizing quilts made by his grandmother, who lived to 104 and continued her craft until she was 98. To create his works, Buffington lays cotton fabric over paintings he has created, then hand-...

Club Meeting 10th August 2016
President Mark welcomed everyone including visiting Rotarian David Collyer who will finally be inducted to our club in a couple of weeks.  Members of the RC Ringwood want to visit for the occasion.
David Button took over the microphone and handled the meeting with ease.

PP Viv spoke about Mental Health Forum.  The District Grant of $2000 has been approved, well done.
Training of Mental First Aid to start in October for 10 people.  If anyone is interested to attend please let Viv know.
The aim is for someone from every club in the South East Junior Football League be trained in mental first aid.

Secretary Adrian reminded all that the Board Meeting is on Monday 15th August 7.30pm at President Mark's home.  Everyone is welcome to attend.

The NYSF (National Youth Science Forum) candidate has been selected.  Lachlan Bevan from Berwick College will attend Canberra in January.  He will visit the club shortly.
Rotaract on Show
This week we learnt all about Rotaract.  We heard from Matt Carswell and Rachel Caulfield who are the President and Vice President of the Casey Cardinia Rotaract Club.  They may be small in numbers but they are very enthusiastic in what they do.

Rotaract similar to Rotary but for people ages 18 – 30 yrs, mainly students and young professionals.   Leadership and Service opportunities is what they offer. For Rotaract clubs to exist they must have a sponsor Rotary Club.  The only cost to the Rotary Club is to pay for the annual training.  Casey and Cardinia Rotaract are jointly sponsored by the RC Berwick and the RC Narre Warren.
This year the training was over a weekend with the President and Vice President having an extra day.  It was extremely valuable for team building, communication and learning the ways of Rotary.

The Conference this year will be in Brisbane.  It is very professional during the day then party all night.  The Rotaract games are just one big party.
Rotaracters against Malaria is the main project for Rotaract Australia.  Last year they raised $11,000.

PP Bill gave the vote of thanks and said there have been 3 Rotaract Clubs associated with RC Berwick over the years.  He said that young people showing interest in the community to help is very commendable.  High praise indeed from one of our Charter Members

We discovered that we have a few old Rotaracters in the club, Jack and Ann Kraan, Bruce & Robyn Shaw, Viv Armstrong, Eric Boon, Adrian Funston to name a few. Are there any more out there???

Thinking of you
From: PDG Tim Moore “Could you pass on my thanks to the club for the 'get well hamper' it was much appreciated and enjoyed.  The chocolates have been hidden from me but the fruit was perfect for my new diet!”

PP Jack Kraan is home after his operation and is feeling chirpy and very happy.

Doug Anderson is in rehabilitation and doing well.  Bill and Sharmaine went to visit him in hospital only to find that he had already moved.

Helen Rosenthal is back in hospital after a set back.  Our thoughts are with her and John at this time
Reasons to love Rotary

PP Gus gave us 5 reasons to love Rotary:

1: We will be eradicating Polio soon.

2: It’s all about social networking.  Paul Harris was the first networker. Attended the conferences and conventions to meet like-minded people.

3: Be connected to people who take action.  Rotarian’s have invented shoes that can be adjusted to 5 sizes, providing bicycles for Cambodian children to attend school, founding Men’s sheds, climbed Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money to end polio and supporting girls who are orphans in South Sudan.

4: Rotary leadership helps the brightest and best with scholarships.  Not only peace but clean water, education, sanitation, disease and growing local economies.

5: Science says Rotarians are happier and healthier.  Meetings offer genuine social connections so that the body release oxytocin, the happiness hormone.  Adults who volunteer and get recognition for their community involvement have higher overall wellbeing scores.  They have less stress than their peers.  Membership in social groups builds self esteem and provides a sense of belonging.
Lisa's Week
Two weeks in, Lisa's loving school, making lots of friends, has been sailing the Gippsland Lakes with her host parents.

She has taken 1000s of pics of kangaroos and kookaburras and been introduced to food that tastes much better than vegemite!

She now owns her own Richmond AFL scarf and been presented with her club name badge - she's real!

She's packing her sleeping bag in preparation to see drop bears (and meet fellow Rotary D9820 Youth Exchange Program students)

Our word for tonight is Guten Appetit!!!!
