From the August 2016 issue of The Rotarian Quilts may be utilitarian objects, but Rod Buffington’s “quilt paintings” – watercolors on paper that are then covered with small bits of fabric – are geometrics where mathematics and whimsy intersect. Buffington, a member of the Rotary Club of Springfield, Ill., didn’t come up with this unusual method overnight. His voilà moment came as he beheld the mesmerizing quilts made by his grandmother, who lived to 104 and continued her craft until she was 98. To create his works, Buffington lays cotton fabric over paintings he has created, then hand-...

Club Meeting 3rd August 2016
This meeting was special as we welcomed Lisa Bayer from Germany as our inbound Exchange Student.  Host parents Geoff and Di are on attendance duties to introduce Lisa to everyone.  Welcome to our club and we hope you enjoy your year with us.
President Mark informed us that there are 4 possible candidates for the RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award) camp in October.  We are sponsoring 2 attendees for this worthwhile program.

Club activities can be used as make up's in lieu of attendance.  Examples of this are the Farmers & Craft Market. This must be with in 10 days of the regular meeting.

Secretary Adrian reminded us all about the District celebration of the 100 years of the Rotary Foundation in November.  It would be great if we can get together a couple of tables together.

PE Ridardo spoke about the Administration portfolio.  He wants to let members know exactly what each role with in the club entails.  The format of the meetings will be reviewed and members input will be sought.  Nothing may change but we want to engage the members and guests at the meeting.
Board positions for the year 2017-18 need to be considered and put in place by the end of September.
There is potential to involve community volunteers for special projects.  The City of Casey has a volunteer matching program which could be tapped into.
Sam Aziz, Mayor City of Casey
Sam Aziz, Mayor of the City of Casey spoke very passionately about what is happening with in our area.  He was born in Cairo and immigrated to Australia when he was 10 in 1983.  He has a Rotary connection with attending RYLA in 1991 where he got a taste for public service.  He has many senior public service positions and this is his second term as Mayor.

Bunjil Place will house the council offices, a 360 seat function centre, new library, activated plaza outside costing $125 million. There will be no impact on rates as savings were used as a deposit. The Federal Government chipped in $10 million.  Selling of commercial assets such as the Lifestyle Centre earned $30 million, therefore the loan repayments will drop from 30 to 10 years.

Traffic is a major problem in the area.  Thompson’s road will be duplicated to East Link and take pressure of the Monash and Clyde Road.  It will also open opportunities for work within the City of Casey.

There is major interest in the Monash University site with Federation University taking it over.  Other interested parties include the Defence industry, private education institutions and IT companies.  It is expected to provide 50 000 jobs in 10 years.

The City of Casey is doing well, all the Kindergarten and Child Care Centres exceeded the national standards.  A survey of local council residents rated the City of Casey well above the state average.

The Victorian Archives Office came and looked at the record maintaining systems.  They want their staff to be trained by City of Casey in record management.

Sam encouraged everyone to look at the Customer Service Charter. It lists every single council service, quality expectations of residents should expect.  Please fill it in.

The City of Casey has a very passionate Mayor who spoke from the heart and without any notes.  Well done.
Lisa's Presentation
Lisa had her first presentation to the club and she did a great job.   She has settled into her first host family at the Doubles.  She saw kangaroos and Emus, ate Vegemite and meat cakes.  She has a football team (Richmond).

School is very different to Germany as it is much bigger.  Lisa will join the volleyball and tennis team.

Art Screen Hire

The art screens were delivered to Tooradin last week for the Coastal Village Art Group.  A profit of $870 was made and they have booked for next year.
Thanks to Peter Batterham, David Grant, Jim Armstrong, David Nutter, Trevor Bailey and Gary Cooper.
Happy Snaps
