On Wednesday, over breakfast with the Rotary Club of Wahroonga, New South Wales, Australian entrepreneur and philanthropist Dick Smith announced a donation of AU$1 million to Rotary (about US$750,000), citing admiration of Rotary members for the time they devote to others. The Rotary Australia Benevolent Society (RABS) will administer the funds. “With 29,500 Rotarians in 1,100 clubs throughout Australia, we have an army of volunteers eager to assist those in need,” says Michael Perkins, RABS chair. “The impact of this donation will be felt throughout all of Australia, from the cities to the...

Each month, eBay, the world’s largest auction website, selects a set of upcoming Live Auction events and donates a portion of all sales proceeds to Rotary. Only U.S. auction sales are eligible. See the schedule of December auctions.

Though Atlanta has seen its share of violence and inequity over time, today it brims with reminders that there is another way. Get inspired while you’re visiting for the 2017 Rotary International Convention from 10 to 14 June. Take a short walk from the convention center to the Center for Civil and Human Rights. There, you can see the handwritten notes, speeches, and sermons of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., experience an interactive 1960s-era lunch counter “sit-in,” and learn more about persecuted groups all over the world. A streetcar will take you to the Martin Luther King Jr...

Club Meeting 7th December 2016
Congratulations to Diana Gomez-Fullaway for her first time as being Chairman. She wasn’t too sure when asked, but she did a great job.

If anyone has not felt brave enough to be chairman, please give it a go.

There is lots of support available and you are amongst friends.  See President Mark for a slot next year.

Ricardo thanked the club and his board for their support of him being President next year.  He is both honoured and privileged to have been nominated.

The Christmas Party next week.  There are still spots available. Please bring some friends along so book in with Sharmaine.

Don't forget that Carols by Candlelight is next Wednesday, no meeting at Holm Park.

An early reminder for the Twilight Christmas Market on Wednesday 21st December.  All hands on deck.
It is a club meeting night so come along when you can if you haven’t already got a job.  Terry has promised hamburgers for all.
Santa will be arriving and there are balloons and lollies for the kids.
Gates open to the public at 4pm so set up is from 2 pm.

Lea told us about the school awards that the club are presenting.  Andy Merrill is presenting at Berwick College.  Isobel Caulfield at Brentwood Primary.
A student from Harkaway Primary will receive their award from the school as all the award nights are on the same day as our Christmas party.

There are still some Christmas Cakes and Puddings available.  See Lea.

MUNA (Model United Nations Assembly) are looking for candidates for next year. Steve Paton is organising and will approach schools.

A well deserved Paul Harris Fellow was presented to our own PP Geoff Double.

After the presentation, President Mark asked Geoff if he would like to say something… Geoff said “something”.  He followed on that is a great honour and he was speechless.  Thanks go to the club for their support and also Scott for being here.

Trent Kusters on Gaming
Our speaker for the night was Trent Kusters, the son of our own Sjaak and Joy.  He is a co-founder and co-director of League of Geeks.  They have a digital board game called Armello.

Trent informed us that the online gaming industry is larger than the film industry and the average age of players is 33 years old.

They started their business with $40 in the bank.  The game was released in 2015.  Lots of hard work aided by government grants, the promise of profit share for collaborators (if the game succeeded) and a Kickstarter program made it happen.

The Kickstarter raised $305,000 in mainly small contributions.  Guppy the frog and figurines were incentives for giving money in the Kickstarter program.

They have won many industry awards including the Studio of the Year at the Australian Game Developer Awards.  Notably they won the Creative Industries category in the 2016 Governor of Victoria Export Awards.

The League of Geeks believe in giving back so are assisting young developers.  They are offering internships and paid scholarships.  An example of this is a game called Push Me Pull You

Trent is travelling the world spruiking the game which has gained them not only exposure in the industry but funding as well.  The future looks bright with new games in development.

Proud parents Sjaak and Joy watched on for this very interesting talk about a world which most of us would know very little about.  Congratulations Trent.
Lisa's Week
Lisa has had a big week as she now has new host parents Jenny and Steve Marshall.  She has settled in, met the family, pets and walked along the beach with them.  Bondi Rescue is now her favourite TV show.

Lisa watched her first netball game and may even play.  It has been a very social week with birthday parties, trips to the Victoria Market and Mount Martha.

She is very happy with her Akubra hat.  It is a gift we give all our inbound students.

The word for the day is “strand”, which means beach.

Uniforms
The uniforms have arrived and are looking great.  We have a supply of “ask me about Rotary” t shirts in stock.

Other orders can still be placed with Jane and Totally Workwear in Berwick, but please let Jane know so the books are kept straight.

A dress shirt with the current logo is being arranged.
Benevolent Society
The Benevolent Society pick ups have been going well.

Members of the Rotaract Club of Casey-Cardinia have assisted.

Goods have been received from St Margarets School, Hailebury Junior School and Kambrya College.

The bins at Eden Rise and Woolworths Berwick are slow but steady.

The Casey North Community Information Support Service as always are doing a great job of sorting, packing and handing out hampers.
