Centurion Club and The Rotary Foundation

Now it is time to make your Centurion Club contributions.

Many members of the Rotary Club of Berwick belong to the Centurion Club although over the past couple of years, it has not been as visible in the Club as it used to be. This year PP Pete Batterham will be the man on the ground to handle your donations or even sign you up to join the Centurions.
So what is it all about?
The commitment you are asked to make is to simply contribute A$100 per year as long as you are able to. The initial commitment is recognised by the presentation of a certificate and the ‘Centurion’ lapel badge
This is not a large commitment but an important one in terms of our overall contribution to The Foundation.
Partners of Rotarians as well as private individuals can also participate in the program and their support would be most welcome.

Rotary Foundation Centurion Program
Make the Rotary Foundation your Charity of Choice. Why?
·       This is a very easy way of getting into the habit of making a personal contribution to The Rotary Foundation – our Charity
·       All Centurion contributions from Rotarians count towards their Club’s Annual Giving total.
·       100% of the funds are used for Areas of Focus projects both locally and internationally – no admin fees
·       It is picked up as part of the District’s contribution resulting in 50% of the contribution coming back to our District to use as support funds for the programs we want to support.
·       50% of your donation comes back to our District in 3 years’ time to support District Grants, Global Grants, Vocation Training Teams, Areas of  Focus Scholarships
·       50% goes to the World Fund
·       Your donation accrues PHF points which you can be awarded, you can transfer the points to you club or to someone else of your choice
·       The money is paid into the Australian Rotary Trust Fund making your contribution tax deductible.

Art Screen Hire
PP Laury Gordyn gave us a quick insight into the hectic schedule of the Art Screen Delivery and Recovery Crew. This elite squad of people is working hard to get the Art Screens in and out with the minimum of fuss. They are getting a great reputation for being punctual, organised, helpful with layouts and happy.

Please recommend them to anyone who is in need of an art screen!
Ride to Conference
For the last 17 years starting a week before the District 9820 Conference, a group of Rotarians, partners of Rotarians and Exchange Students go on a 600km pedal to raise money for charity. This year our Club was represented by Josie Wilson and the unstoppable Lisa Bayer. All in all, 46 riders raised just over $50,000 for their efforts.

If you sponsored either Josie or Lisa, please have your donations at the ready!
District Conference update
PE Ricardo gave a comprehensive roundup of the recent District 9820 Conference in Hobart. In a nutshell the speakers were great, the location was great and the venue was magnificent.

District Conference is the best place to network with fellow Rotarians. Learn, share, inspire and be inspired. Next year, the District Conference will be in Sale on 18th to 21st February. Contact David Button if you want to know more about this Conference.
Holland Festival help
A couple of weeks ago we heard from Ian Donald (RC Monash) about the Holland Festival and how they need some help to make it run. Many hands went up in the room to help. If you were one of those hands and are still available to help, please contact PP Adrian Froggatt so he can email you a volunteer form. We currently only have 5 members signed up.
Bowling Bowling Bowling
Happier times when we were a force to be reckoned with in the land of lawn bowls.

On the 19th April, it is our chance to shine again and bring home the shield from the Rotary Club of Monbulk's firm grip. It will be an away game and a bus is on offer to take us up to Monbulk while we work on our game plan. No experience is necessary! It is a lot of fun. See Funno for more details, or better still invite a friend (preferably with bowling experience, like a lot of bowling experience) to join our squad.
News
Rotary Donations in Kind
Last Saturday a small team of Rotarians and teachers loaded a truck with used school furniture and took it up to Rotary Donations in Kind in Footscray. Loading was like poetry in motion as we weaved the furniture together to make the best of the available space. Special thanks to Di Scheepers, Andy, Laury and special guest Rory Fabbri who took some great photos.

The Rotary Foundation Award
At the Rotary District 9820 Conference in March, the Rotary Club of Berwick achieved the highest contributions to the Rotary Foundation from District 9820 in the year 2015-2016.
Here we have President Mark receiving the award from District Foundation Director PDG Tony Spring.

We are currently in the 100th year of The Rotary Foundation. It all started with Arch Klumph’s idea for an endowment fund dedicated to “doing good in the world” which planted the seed for The Rotary Foundation in 1917. That one idea and an initial contribution of $26.50 set in motion a powerful force for good that has transformed millions of lives around the globe. This probably doesn't mean much to the average person, but through The Rotary Foundation we are able to do great things!

To find out about how well The Rotary Foundation performs against all the other charities, try this link https://www.charitynavigator.org

I think it is a great charity.
  1. It is well run. (check out the Charity Navigator data)
  2. has many checks and balances.
  3. only approves projects that meet the set out criteria.
  4. does not fully fund projects.
  5. creates partnerships that ensure long term project success.
Since the inception of the Rotary Club of Berwick in 1961, our Club has given $273,472.51 to The Rotary Foundation.
