Legendary singer and polio survivor Donovan Leitch, better known simply as Donovan, has joined Rotary in its fight to eradicate the paralyzing disease that afflicted him during much of his childhood. Donovan contracted polio at age three in Glasgow, Scotland. The disease weakened his right leg and left it thinner and shorter than the other. Confined to his bed for much of his childhood, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame singer said his father would read him poetry. In a recent interview with the Daily Express, Donovan said that listening to poetry piqued his interest in creative writing. “If I...

A great meeting that was full of information.

Rotary Club of Berwick emails and club runner issues resolved.

The board agreed to donate $2000 to Royal Flying Doctor Service.  In return we will have onsite presence at their golf day to promote our golf day.

A very nice bottle of red wine will be donated for the Foundation 100th birthday gala auction.  Terry Carmichael has a budget and will source it.

Cluster meeting hosted by the RC Endeavour Hills on Thursday October 20th.  This will replace our normal meeting for that week.

Assignments nearly set for this year ready for the new handbook.

The Farmers & Craft Market is on Saturday 27th.  Terry encouraged members to bring their families along.

Progressive dinner will be held on Saturday 12th November.  Save the date and put it in your diary.

21st September joint meeting with Pakenham with speakers about the Balibo House project
Rotaract had a sausage sizzle at Bunnings last Saturday and raised $1700.  Well done for a first time effort.

Trevor Bailey spoke about having a secure container at the trolley bays at supermarkets.  With signage, people would be encouraged to put their gold coin in as a donation.  Coles at Eden Rise is open to the idea.

Easy money and the opportunity to promote Rotary.  RC Dromana is already doing this at an IGA.
All Things Club Protection and Insurance
Frank Spiteri, the District Protection Officer spoke on Risk Management, insurance and youth protection.

Here he is with Graham and the "I am just the messenger" cap

The Australian Rotary Insurance Policy is very extensive and extremely good value at only $30 per member.  For this we get amongst other things; $50 million public/product liability cover, $50,000 Rotary property/assets, $5000 members personal property, $10,000 trailer/caravan/BBQ.

For this the insurer requires accurate risk management for all events and programs.  Most importantly the project must be 100% Rotary “owned” and not jointly run with another organisation, eg Councils for it to be covered.

For Rotary Markets, all outside vendors must have their own Public Liability insurance.  If they don’t they must pay a $6 fee to the Rotary Club for cover.  This policy is separate to our normal cover.

RI is taking very seriously anyone who has contact with any Rotary Youth Program.  Any person over 18 yrs and has direct contact with youth must have a Working With Children Check and the Volunteer Declaration (Form 3).

The Working With Children means you are eligible to work with children, the Volunteer Declaration determines if you are suitable to be with children.

Our own Club Protection Officer Graham will be making sure that everything is all up to date.  It is imperative to have everything in order in case something drastic does happen.

He even discovered that the Fire Escape at Holm Park is marked “staff only”????  Rosemary knows where it is

Thank You From Jack Kraan
I am writing to thank the Rotary Club of Berwick and its members for the lovely hamper of fruit and chocolates that I received on my return home from hospital last week.  I am enjoying both the fruit and the chocolates.  I am allowed the chocolates because I need to put a bit of weight back on.

I would also like to thank members for their support and good wishes over the last 9 months.  The chemotherapy, radiation and surgery are all behind me now and I am looking forward to my recovery and getting back to being an active member of the Club in the near future.

Thank you & Regards,
Jack Kraan
Happy Snaps

Attendance does matter!
Club leaders are encouraged to emphasise to club members and prospective members the value and significance of regular attendance.
Please note, Rotary rules on attendance are basically still the same as always, ie members are required to attend Rotary a minimum of 50%.
However, Rotary’s definition of what is included in attendance has been modified.
So what is counted in Rotary attendance?
