In 2008 Daniel led a group of people who launched the Thankyou brand and have seen it grow from a small start-up become one of Australia’s leading mainstream social enterprises. Thankyou’s products are stocked by major retailers in Australia, with every product contributing to helping end global poverty. To date, Thankyou has raised over $17 million to impact the lives of people across 22 countries. |

This week we will have a night that will be a little challenging, but full of fun, with a chance to catch up. Please send in a photograph of one of your tools. Why you may ask? Because the challenge will be to match the tool with the owner! The choice is yours to make! It may be a favourite tool, an old tool you can’t bear to part with, a tool you bought on a whim and then never used very often, a gardening tool, a building tool, a cooking tool, a craft tool, or a tool that you can’t live without! The choice is yours for whatever reason, but do have a story to go with it! Please send the picture to isobel@thecaulfields.com.au by Tuesday Oct 5th at the latest to make the night successful and a bit of a fun! Have pen and paper ready to write down your answers on the night. Everyone will score at least 1 on the quiz, when they see their own tool on the screen.

Rotary Overseas Recycled Playgrounds - Wayne Jenkins After a year of very little action, 2022 is set to be a busy year with lots of projects to get our members back where we belong - making a difference in our community! Tonight we will hear about one of these projects, the Rotary Overseas Relocated Playgrounds (RORP). District 9820 RORP Project Coordinator, Wayne Jenkins, will be presenting on this wonderful project. RORP finds surplus playground equipment and works with councils and private industry to ensure it can be labeled, carefully decommissioned, audited and sent to partner overseas Rotary clubs for a further assessment and installation in communities without access to safe playgrounds.
In the near future the City of Casey will be renewing several playgrounds across our Council and guess who's project director said her club can help... yep, yours!!! Jen Marshall has invited Wayne to explain how the project works so that the Rotary Club of Berwick can assist Wayne with the dismantling of the redundant playgrounds to be sent overseas.
We will also be joined by some surprise guests who have previously been involved in RORP projects.
So join us to hear about a project that brings joy to children overseas, reduces waste going to landfill and gets Rotarians back working in the community.
Tonight we will also be supporting Australian Rotary Health's Lift The Lid On Mental Illness so be sure to wear a hat - the crazier the better. A $5 donation per hat is recommended or $10 if you want to go hatless! Check out this week's Spoke n Word for more details.

Tonight we will be watching a video presentation from Ann Lee Hussey. Ann Lee Hussey has made the eradication of polio and the alleviation of suffering by polio survivors her life’s work. She has shared her story hundreds of times, carrying the message of PolioPlus around the Rotary world and beyond, raising money and creating new converts to the fight. She was only 17 months old when she contracted polio, three months after the public release of the disease’s vaccine in 1955. Following years of physical therapy, multiple surgeries and braces, Ann Lee walks with limitations, and has spent the past 20 years travelling internationally to save other children from the crippling effects of the disease. She is determined that no child will needlessly suffer what she herself has been through. With Rotary World Polio Day coming up on October 24th this is a chance to focus our attention on this great Rotary Initiative. A number of club members are participating in Rotary Walk With Us to End Polio as part of the Berwick Rotary Boomers and Shakers Team. ART SCREENS DELIVERY TO SORRENTO
Dear members and friends,
The art exhibition organised by the Rotary Club of Sorrento is a major component of the art screens fundraiser, with all screens hired for the occasion. This year the delivery will be on 31 DECEMBER and all help available is needed.
Please meet at the shed at 8am on Friday 31 December. Laury and Eric will be towing and President David will be there with his truck as well.
The Rotary Club of Sorrento has been advised that we will deliver the screens to the door as we did last year and provide them with the cable ties and hooks for them to set the screens up in place, so the job should be an "in-and-out" task.
Collection of the screens will be on Tuesday 11 January. Laury will be towing, but we need another tower as Eric cannot make it that day. Please let me know if you can tow or if you can help as well.
All the best for the new year and thank you for your support,
Gus

This week we start 2022 back at Holm Park. We have been away for so long, it is time for a relaxed social meeting to make up for missing our get together at Jack and Ann's Garden Party. Partners and friends are very welcome. The focus of the meeting is fellowship so there will be no formalities apart from David Nutter and PP Gus massaging our brains to fill out the program for the year. Almost every Rotary Club I talk to is itching to do "SOMETHING". Life has been shut down to curb the spread of COVID and in doing so, put everyone's life in neutral. It is very hard to get out of neutral and into first gear, so let's talk about a few baby steps to get us active in the community again after "The Long Sleep". While we are chatting we will discuss Omicron’s effect on RCB events, how we are feeling about the current situation and what we are concerned about. David and PP Gus will sprout about the great exciting program they have lined up for the 9th of February and an exclusive preview of the list of future program events. There might be a hint of travel feature fun nights organized by Di Double. David and Gus will be asking for program suggestions, your favourite Rotary Program idea or event, and then a list of who we want to volunteer as our next few ‘behind the badge’ speakers. See you all on the 2nd.

Tonight our guest speaker is Dr Michael Beech. Michael is a general practitioner who has worked in suburban Melbourne for many years. He decided to have a late career change and has spent the last two years working in Alice Springs. He started in a conventional general practice clinic, but for his second year in Alice worked for the aboriginal health service CONGRESS. They are an outstanding organisation and have clinics in Alice Springs and on various communities. Many of the patients he saw and treated were people who live on communities, but visit Alice Springs for medical care. He was also involved of course with aboriginal people who live in Alice Springs and in the town camps. From a personal point of view he says he had quite a steep learning curve as the central Australian Alice aboriginal population have a completely different set of medical issues to the people he was used to treating. A lot of their problems are based around nutrition poverty and the difficult Issues for them of adjusting to white society.
Michael will be speaking about these issues and looks forward to also sharing some photographs he took of the beautiful desert and McDonald Ranges.
Year 12 Berwick College, Ryan Speller will be coming along to tell us about his National Youth Science Forum experience. He was the RC Berwick sponsored candidate and the experience was held over 10 days in January. The program was changed to virtual due to the high number of COVID cases. It will be interesting to learn from Ryan how it went and if any physical program is planned for when case numbers settle down. The National Youth Science Forum is a keenly sort after program for students obsessed with science. It aims to give students a head start with building a network, selecting the right university pathway, giving a preview to future job opportunities in science as well as delving into the exciting world of scientific discovery. |

BERWICK ROTARY at the Harkaway Cemetery Did you know there is a pioneer cemetery right here in Harkaway? Do you often wonder where some of the local street names come from? Do you often think of ghosts past, the beginnings of our community? Welcome to a short program where we explore the history of the cemetery which dates back to 1873 in the time that Ernst Wanke was farming the land. Hear about the establishment of the cemetery by the Lutheran community of Harkaway and tales of the Lutheran School and Church. And the Harkaway Bell – don’t forget the bell ! We shall give it a gong or two. Local historial Neil Lucas will lead us on a walk around the cemetery with a description of some of the graves and their history. After the tales and tours we will adjourn to Holm Park for dinner before it gets dark and spooky. Meet by 6:30pm sharp at the Harkaway Cemetery, 202 Hessell Rd, Harkaway for the commencement of the tour. At 7:00pm we will adjourn to Holm Park for dinner commencing approx 7:15pm |

Tonight we will be travelling with Sharon and David Anderson to the exotic shores of Morocco, a country where African, Arab and European cultures are entwined. Located at the mouth of the Mediterranean Sea, Morocco is the closest point of contact to Europe for Africa as a continent. Morocco is a land of tolerance, a blend of cultures and religions, a country known for its amazing hospitality. The fascinating mixture of history, art, food, music and architecture makes Morocco an unforgettable destination. Moroccan food and music will make this a special evening to remember.

Autumn Living ….the time after full time work/family duties and before whatever comes next. For those who do not know me do not be fooled by the bio. I’m a down to earth hands-on lawyer. 50 years in the law this year, one of the first female partners in Lancashire, then some wonderful years in London with Withers. Later a mergers and acquisitions partner with one of the largest firms in Europe and beyond and the last 20 years in the Berwick area. What do I know personally about “Retirement Living” absolutely nothing….. I’m not planning on retiring. However, over the last 20 years I have dealt with most of the “Retirement Villages” in the Southeast of Victoria and I will give you my take on life after full time work/family duties and my experiences with the legal aspects of “Retirement Living” OK let’s call it Autumn Living as there is another season to go after this one!!! Over a million Aussies step up to clean up our parks and public spaces every year, donating their time to improve the environment. This is our chance to join one million other Aussies to show the Rotary cares about our community and gets down and dirty to deliver at least one clean park in our wonderful city! Cleaning up a small piece of Berwick gives a little self-satisfaction for one day and there is nothing wrong with that. Rotary can do way more than that, so join us at Buchanan Park to talk about the many other ways that Rotary can be a positive force in the community (while we are picking up rubbish of course!). You don't even have to be a Rotarian to join in! We are happy to have anyone who wants to give back to the community to join in and enjoy a morning chatting while we get to work. Click the guest button to the left to let us know you are coming along or use this link: https://rotaryberwick.org/Event/Register/159281fb-e1ed-48c9-8ea8-0c8bcd8dc753 There is no cost to attend.

Mar 12, 2022 10:00 am - 11:00 am
Most people have busy lifestyles and don't have a lot of spare time to experience Rotary. That is why we started a Saturday morning coffee group to chat about different things in an informal setting from the comfort of your own home.
You can stay in your PJs, call in while you are exercising or out in the garden. It's all ok because we just want to meet you.
It will start at 10.00 am and finish at around 10.30 am on Zoom.

Mar 16, 2022 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
This week Rotarians, friends and guests are invited to join us in tackling one of the biggest challenges our community is facing - Climate Change.
With floods currently devastating Queensland, it is a sober reminder that global warming will result in severe weather events such as flooding, drought and heat waves, more intense bushfire seasons and rising sea levels.
In response, the City of Casey is developing a Climate Action Plan to reduce emissions and tackle the contributing factors of climate change. Council has set an ambitious target of net zero emissions by 2037 for the community. In this meeting we will get creative and discuss the actions you think are important in addressing climate change.
Please bring along your mobile phone for one of the activities.

Mar 23, 2022 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
It's time for our annual Lawn Bowls match against the Rotary Club of Monbulk and we need all the help we can get! This is a great night out to play against a friendly bunch of Rotarians and non-Rotarians. Knowledge of the game is useful but certainly not a prerequisite to having a good time and enjoying a bit of fun on the pitch. Please wear flat shoes on the rink. Meals and drinks are at bar prices. Car pooling or a bus may be organised for transport. Please register before showing up so the teams can be compiled before the event. We'd like to have an idea of numbers by Friday. When registering, please include in the comments if you wish to car pool or will be meeting us at Monbulk. Car poolers can meet at Holm Park Reserve for departure at 6:00pm For those going direct to Monbulk, please be there by 6:30pm Game On!
