Feb 02, 2022 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
This week we start 2022 back at Holm Park. We have been away for so long, it is time for a relaxed social meeting to make up for missing our get together at Jack and Ann's Garden Party. Partners and friends are very welcome. The focus of the meeting is fellowship so there will be no formalities apart from David Nutter and PP Gus massaging our brains to fill out the program for the year. Almost every Rotary Club I talk to is itching to do "SOMETHING". Life has been shut down to curb the spread of COVID and in doing so, put everyone's life in neutral. It is very hard to get out of neutral and into first gear, so let's talk about a few baby steps to get us active in the community again after "The Long Sleep". While we are chatting we will discuss Omicron’s effect on RCB events, how we are feeling about the current situation and what we are concerned about. David and PP Gus will sprout about the great exciting program they have lined up for the 9th of February and an exclusive preview of the list of future program events. There might be a hint of travel feature fun nights organized by Di Double. David and Gus will be asking for program suggestions, your favourite Rotary Program idea or event, and then a list of who we want to volunteer as our next few ‘behind the badge’ speakers. See you all on the 2nd.

Tonight our guest speaker is Dr Michael Beech. Michael is a general practitioner who has worked in suburban Melbourne for many years. He decided to have a late career change and has spent the last two years working in Alice Springs. He started in a conventional general practice clinic, but for his second year in Alice worked for the aboriginal health service CONGRESS. They are an outstanding organisation and have clinics in Alice Springs and on various communities. Many of the patients he saw and treated were people who live on communities, but visit Alice Springs for medical care. He was also involved of course with aboriginal people who live in Alice Springs and in the town camps. From a personal point of view he says he had quite a steep learning curve as the central Australian Alice aboriginal population have a completely different set of medical issues to the people he was used to treating. A lot of their problems are based around nutrition poverty and the difficult Issues for them of adjusting to white society.
Michael will be speaking about these issues and looks forward to also sharing some photographs he took of the beautiful desert and McDonald Ranges.
Year 12 Berwick College, Ryan Speller will be coming along to tell us about his National Youth Science Forum experience. He was the RC Berwick sponsored candidate and the experience was held over 10 days in January. The program was changed to virtual due to the high number of COVID cases. It will be interesting to learn from Ryan how it went and if any physical program is planned for when case numbers settle down. The National Youth Science Forum is a keenly sort after program for students obsessed with science. It aims to give students a head start with building a network, selecting the right university pathway, giving a preview to future job opportunities in science as well as delving into the exciting world of scientific discovery. |

BERWICK ROTARY at the Harkaway Cemetery Did you know there is a pioneer cemetery right here in Harkaway? Do you often wonder where some of the local street names come from? Do you often think of ghosts past, the beginnings of our community? Welcome to a short program where we explore the history of the cemetery which dates back to 1873 in the time that Ernst Wanke was farming the land. Hear about the establishment of the cemetery by the Lutheran community of Harkaway and tales of the Lutheran School and Church. And the Harkaway Bell – don’t forget the bell ! We shall give it a gong or two. Local historial Neil Lucas will lead us on a walk around the cemetery with a description of some of the graves and their history. After the tales and tours we will adjourn to Holm Park for dinner before it gets dark and spooky. Meet by 6:30pm sharp at the Harkaway Cemetery, 202 Hessell Rd, Harkaway for the commencement of the tour. At 7:00pm we will adjourn to Holm Park for dinner commencing approx 7:15pm |

Tonight we will be travelling with Sharon and David Anderson to the exotic shores of Morocco, a country where African, Arab and European cultures are entwined. Located at the mouth of the Mediterranean Sea, Morocco is the closest point of contact to Europe for Africa as a continent. Morocco is a land of tolerance, a blend of cultures and religions, a country known for its amazing hospitality. The fascinating mixture of history, art, food, music and architecture makes Morocco an unforgettable destination. Moroccan food and music will make this a special evening to remember.

Autumn Living ….the time after full time work/family duties and before whatever comes next. For those who do not know me do not be fooled by the bio. I’m a down to earth hands-on lawyer. 50 years in the law this year, one of the first female partners in Lancashire, then some wonderful years in London with Withers. Later a mergers and acquisitions partner with one of the largest firms in Europe and beyond and the last 20 years in the Berwick area. What do I know personally about “Retirement Living” absolutely nothing….. I’m not planning on retiring. However, over the last 20 years I have dealt with most of the “Retirement Villages” in the Southeast of Victoria and I will give you my take on life after full time work/family duties and my experiences with the legal aspects of “Retirement Living” OK let’s call it Autumn Living as there is another season to go after this one!!! Over a million Aussies step up to clean up our parks and public spaces every year, donating their time to improve the environment. This is our chance to join one million other Aussies to show the Rotary cares about our community and gets down and dirty to deliver at least one clean park in our wonderful city! Cleaning up a small piece of Berwick gives a little self-satisfaction for one day and there is nothing wrong with that. Rotary can do way more than that, so join us at Buchanan Park to talk about the many other ways that Rotary can be a positive force in the community (while we are picking up rubbish of course!). You don't even have to be a Rotarian to join in! We are happy to have anyone who wants to give back to the community to join in and enjoy a morning chatting while we get to work. Click the guest button to the left to let us know you are coming along or use this link: https://rotaryberwick.org/Event/Register/159281fb-e1ed-48c9-8ea8-0c8bcd8dc753 There is no cost to attend.

This week Rotarians, friends and guests are invited to join us in tackling one of the biggest challenges our community is facing - Climate Change.
With floods currently devastating Queensland, it is a sober reminder that global warming will result in severe weather events such as flooding, drought and heat waves, more intense bushfire seasons and rising sea levels.
In response, the City of Casey is developing a Climate Action Plan to reduce emissions and tackle the contributing factors of climate change. Council has set an ambitious target of net zero emissions by 2037 for the community. In this meeting we will get creative and discuss the actions you think are important in addressing climate change.
Please bring along your mobile phone for one of the activities.

We have just received a video from our partner club that shows the install and use of SkyHydrant water filters in 6 villages. A great follow-on from our visit last week to Disaster Aid Australia where we had a chance to see a working SkyHydrant.

"I have been preparing my “Photographic Journey” presentation for the Rotary Club of Berwick, on the 13th of April.
Putting my photographic journey on paper made me realise how much I have learned. Most things in life require time and effort and photography is no different, always experimenting and testing new skills.
Over the years my photography has been equally frustrating and rewarding. Thank you for letting me share my journey with you."

Tonight our guest speaker is Jesse Barnett. Jessie is a 14year old student at Kambrya College.
Jesse will be attending wth Carmel Ukena who is a teacher at Kambrya College. Jesse has High functioning Autism and is still able to show excellent leadership being voted class captain every single year at the school. He excels given responsibility and enjoys a challenge. Jessie does get exhausted blocking out noise in the background and at times struggles with talking with his own peers.
Jesse is excellent with his manners and assisting students with any problems they are having. Jesse is great with participating in school leadership with ANZAC days ie raising and lowering flag for school at assembly. Jesse is always trustworthy and reliable and very responsible. He has a very mature manner and always assists teachers with any requests.
Ms Ukena says he was extremely helpful when she had computer issues with Microsoft teams teaching Science. Jesse always had patience to help me when I got stuck and the other students as well.
Through out the three years Ms Ukena has known Jesse he has always shown interest in helping the community. The last two years Jesse has shown a deep desire to get involved in Politics to make the community a better place to live in.
Jesse’s smile and enthusiasm is contagious and very heart felt. He always tries to improve things for students at Kambrya College and Ms Ukena is confident that moving onto his local community will be a natural progression. Jesse is extremely hard working and has much energy to put towards his goal of getting into politics. He is genuine and real and has a photographic memory that simply would put many of our current politicians.
All Jesse needs is an opportunity from Berwick Rotary Club to see how he can make an incredible difference in his local community, like he has at Kambrya College.

You can stay in your PJs, call in while you are exercising or out in the garden. It's all ok because we just want to meet you.
It will start at 10.00 am and finish at around 10.30 am on Zoom.

So brush up on your general knowledge and head on down to Holm Park for what promises to be a great night of fun and fellowship. You are guaranteed to leave the night with knowledge of a few facts that you never knew before.
