Following the tragic loss and injury of Defence Personnel in Afghanistan in 2010, Harkaway local, Helen Comport, learnt of the need to reach out to wounded ADF personnel and honour their sacrifice for serving Australia on a combat deployment. The quilt, made to wrap veteran or Defence personnel, was such a powerful symbol in a traumatic time that it felt like an important issue that Australia should become involved in. Helen learnt how touched her son was when he received a quilt made by Americans following critical injuries he sustained in Afghanistan. Following this tragedy, Helen decided to set up an Australian group to recognise veterans and Defence Personnel touched by war by presenting them withquilts. Tonight we will hear Helen’s Quilt’s of Valour Australian story.

Tonight we will be assembling and packing 200 birthing kits for the Birthing Kit Foundation. Birthing kit assembly commences a 5:30pm. A regular club meeting and dinner will follow the birthding kit assembly. In partnership with the Adelaide Hills Zonta Club, Joy and the dedicated volunteers began assembling and distributing these simple kits around the world. The scale and impact of this project continued to grow and what was once known as the ‘Zonta Birthing Kit Project’ transformed into the Birthing Kit Foundation Australia in September 2006. Since our establishment, the team at BKFA has worked to extend and enhance our reach, forming strong partnerships with many Field Partners in the Sub-Saharan Africa, Asian and Indo-Pacific regions. Our work has expanded from the original Birthing Kit Program to a range of In-Country Programs that engage individuals, families and communities to create sustainable change and improve maternal and newborn health outcomes.

This week our guest speaker is Vincent Lo from from Mercy Ships
Mercy Ships began our mission to provide hope and healing to those in need in 1978. Each year we send hospital ships filled with volunteer professionals who selflessly provide life-changing surgeries to children and adults who otherwise would go without. Together we are saving lives.
About Mercy Ships:
Mercy Ships is an NGO with the largest civilian hospital ships, having a primary focus on bringing free surgical care to the people of Africa. Our aim is to bring world class medical care to the people of Africa, where safe, affordable and timely surgical care is severely lacking, On top of providing 100% free surgical care to these forgotten poor, we also provide teaching and training to the local healthcare workers, in order to strengthen the county's health care system. Our crew consist of volunteers from over 40 different nations, and we choose to be self funded for our services, in order to facilitate maximum amount of donations to be utilised for our work for the patients.
About Vincent:
I am the Senior Pharmacist onboard the Africa Mercy, one of the 2 ships in our fleet of hospital ships serving the people of Africa. I recently returned from my 2nd term with Mercy Ships, spending 16 months onboard, out of those, 10 months in Senegal, West Africa. My job is involved in the clinical side of providing medications to all parts of the hospital, as well as servicing the 600+ local and international crew member onboard. And also, the logistical side of sourcing and arranging all the medicines require to supply the work we do. I was at a unique position to interact with all the patients receiving surgeries onboard, as well as pretty much all the crew members. So it is more than just counting tablets and typing labels! Moreover, I will be departing Melbourne on the 25th August to return to Sierra Leone and Madagascar for my 3rd field service, this time for 28 months.

Operation Newstart This week our guest speaker is Jimmy from Operation Newstart. Operation Newstart is an innovative re-engagement program for young people aged 14 -16 attending Victorian Government Secondary schools who are at significant educational risk. Many are at risk of expulsion, have failed to attend school regularly and are at risk of not completing their secondary education. Using a combination of experiential learning, wilderness therapy, family group work, mediation, counselling and community interconnectedness, our goal is to prevent students from disengaging prematurely from their families and schools and to prepare pathways to further education and employment.
