President's Rumblings
What an amazing guest speaker we had at our meeting last week.
We were very fortunate to have Sally Beard from Backpacks for Vic Kids (B4VK).
Sally told us about how she started B4VK when she became aware that the only existing service filling a key need was located up in Queensland.
From humble beginnings operating out of her own home B4VK has now grown to be providing thousands of backpacks each year for for kids in need.
Starting out with providing the ME packs (My Essentials) - Backpacks and nappy bags for displaced children aged 0-17 years who may be homeless, entering out-of-home care or emergency accommodation that have also expanded into providing School Essentials Packs, Christmas 4 Kids in Care Santa Packs, Youth Outreach Packs and Disaster Relief Packs.
Sally is clearly someone who is fully invested in doing good in the community and making life a little easier for kids in need.
The 2023-24 board had already determined to make a donation of $1500 to B4VK.
Sally was extremely surprised and grateful and her immediate response was "that’s 15 more kids we can support"

Cheers,
Andrew

Speakers wanted
Hello fellow Rotarians and friends,
Let me start with a big Thank you to IPP David Anderson and his board for an amazing year. And Congrats and Good Luck to Pres. Andrew Somers and his Board.
Just thought I'd run something by everyone:

⭐️ Could you'll please share contact details of Rotarians or Speakers who would be able to talk about topics related to Rotary’s Seven Areas of Focus.

⭐️ May I also request Rotarians from our club to volunteer as speakers for topics such as:
     - History of Rotary Club of Berwick with pics..
     - History of Rotary. What’s the Rotary connection to the UN?
     - What is the significance of badges like PHF, Sapphire etc.
     - Any other topics of interest.

⭐ I’ll do the all the invitations and coordination .. just point me in the right direction 😊

Thanking you,
Warm Regards,
Michelle Oliver-Rodrigues.
Donations in Kind, Networking, and Hendo’s Restos
Donations in Kind, Networking, and Hendo’s Restos : The reach of Rotary and the power of social media in forging connections.

What is Donations In Kind?
Donations in Kind is a volunteer recycling facility, part of Rotary’s Donations in Kind (DIK) network a project of Rotary Australia World Community Service.  DIK collects and redistributes donated goods, principaly from companies, hospitals, and educational institutions, but also from the public.
Donations in Kind has shipped 708 containers of equipment and supplies worth 76 million dollars to 36 countries, whilst local physiotherapists and occupational therapists collect goods weekly andother goods are donated locally for training purposes.
The Rotary Club of Berwick is a strong supporter of DIK, not only sourcing and transporting goods to the warehouse, but also contributing to the annual rent of the warehouse in conjunction with several Rotary clubs.

Networking
A gentleman by the name of Ian Henwood saw Rotary Club of Berwick member, Trevor Watson’s, social media posts about Rotary Recycled Overseas Playgrounds, and liked what we do.  Trevor is a great networker and reached out to Ian to find he recycles bicycles!
A win win in the making!

  Hendo’s Restos
Ian Henwood and his family source bicycles from hard rubbish and via donation, under the banner of Hendo’s Restos. Ian and his daughter Jasmine (pictured) are skilled in bike repair and detailing and look to re-home the bikes to those in need in the community. Quality control is important evidenced by their motto ‘No shit leaves the shop!’ Hendo’s Restos have pledged to provide more restored bikes to those in need in the future.

The Outcome
The Rotary Club of Berwick has accepted a generous donation of 6 children’s bikes, and accessories, from Hendo’s Restos.  Rotarians “at work”, Eric and Trevor picked up the bikes from Wantirna, ready for delivery to DIK Donations in Kind warehouse in West Footscray before being loaded into a container destined for Balibo, Timor-Leste.

We’re pleased to inform that Ian and his family will be attending the 14th August club meeting as our guest speakers. We look forward to hearing Hendo’s Restos story and thanking him for their generosity.
If you would like to know more, come along to hear in person.
