Presidents Message
A topic that is starting to emerge in the public and sporting world, week on week is the value placed on people being their authentic selves.
What that means is that any of us can drop all those defensive shields we accumulate over our lives and be the person we are truly meant to be, as long as there is a safe and welcoming environment and the folk around us are in tune with managing individual biases.
Getting involved in tasks in a safe and engaging way to the fullness of ability, and having some real fun is key to the prosperity of this club as well as any other organisation. We all do better when we give ourselves permission to give of ourselves in a realistic way, not the way we think we are expected to.
I’m learning heaps about the club and the members as I dig in, and many things have reminded me about behavioural personalities and the need for me to adapt my approach based on the way people want to interact. I’m never going to try to look for people to change, but you may observe me interact differently with folk based on their inherent personality traits.
Against this background, there are still a few roles that are yet to be filled and in my desire to ensure everyone is engaged the way they want to be, I’ll continue reaching out.
The other thing I want to let everyone know is that the Rotary Club of Greater Dandenong Endeavour Hills and Casey - Cardinia Rotaract Club are sponsoring a Mental Health Forum titled “Healthy Minds” to be held on Tuesday August 15 at 6.30 pm for a 7 pm start. The venue is Lyndale Secondary College Auditorium. There will be some extraordinary Speakers on the night and I encourage you to register. This is also a unique opportunity for anyone to invite family / friends / colleagues if you think it helpful.

Have a good weekend and I look forward to catching up next week at our meeting.
This weeks meeting in review
This was meeting number ONE for newly inducted President Dave Anderson.

From the get-go, it was fun and chatty. There was a hint of Christmas in July with Christmas decorations everywhere, plus a range of beautiful lights. President Dave didn't miss a beat as we rumbled through the meeting.

The food was amazing with full compliments to Bob and Vicky our wonderful caterers. I am looking forward to next weeks dinner already!

Our guest speaker was Greg King. Greg is the District 9820 Paul Harris Society Chair. Greg told us all about the impact Rotary has had on his life and why he is so passionate about Rotary and the Rotary Foundation. Greg spoke about getting value for money when donating to charity. He told us that our charity, The Rotary Foundation has one of the lowest fees, leaving 89.8% going straight to projects. Fees are broken down into Administration fees of 4.4% and Fundraising expenses of 5.8%. More information can be found here: CLICK HERE

The Rotary Foundation is also where most of the money is found through a grant system for Rotary work around the world. Our Club has been fortunate to be successful in the application of District and Global grants over the last 10 years, but the availability of the funds is linked to the amount of donations within a district. 50% of donated funds return to the district after three years for use by all the clubs in the district. In the past, the Rotary Club of Berwick had a strong number of members who donated $100 AUD per year through our Centurion Club program or donated $26.50 AUD through the Every Rotarian, Every Year program. Unfortunately, donations by club members have fallen away significantly since 2019.

Greg went on to talk about the Paul Harris Society and the importance of this group of people. Paul Harris Society members comprise 1.5% of Rotarians but contribute 20% of funds to The Rotary Foundation. To be a Paul Harris Society member, you must commit to donating $1,000 US per year to the Rotary Foundation. There are 22 Paul Harris Society members in District 9820.

Greg is very passionate about Rotary and what Rotarians can do to make a difference in the world. If you feel you want to rejoin the Centurion Club or contribute to the Rotary Foundation, please talk to Foundation Director Jack Kraan.

Donations in Kind - making a difference through volunteering
Imagine what would happen if two Rotary Clubs got together and spent a morning working out? Not at the gym but a place where every bit of effort made a difference to someone, somewhere in the world.

This trip involved picking up excess equipment from Coastcare Medical Equipment Hire & Sales and taking it to Rotary Donations in Kind in Footscray. Thank you to Coastcare Medical Equipment Hire & Sales for donating the equipment. It will all be put to good use!

Please take the time to view our volunteers in action! It was a fun and educational morning.

Violence Free Families

Violence Free Families was created as part of the community service outreach of the Rotary Club of Brighton, Victoria.

In 1995, the Brighton Rotary Club became keenly aware of the alarming extent of family violence in the community after its attention was drawn to the death of a young child. As a then all-male club, it adopted the slogan: “Men taking responsibility for men’s behaviour” and took active steps that would help make a difference.

Since then the club has:

  • established a non-profit company to deliver and support men’s behaviour change programs and the safety of participant’s partners and children
  • sponsored research into the short term outcomes of men’s behaviour change programs with Monash University, through support of Australian Rotary Health
  • raised over $1,000,000 to support these initiatives
  • has now been joined by the whole Rotary district of 69 clubs to help end family violence.

Violence Free Families (VFF) was formed in 2009 to focus in more dedicated ways on the prevention of family violence. Essential to our ongoing work is the longitudinal research project with Monash University, looking into the long term outcomes of men’s behaviour change program and whether or not they do make a real difference to families and children’s lives.

Outcomes of this research help direct scarce resources and helps VFF lobby governments, of all persuasions, and philanthropic funds to invest in family violence prevention

We invite you to share in our vision – a vision of “violence free families”.

I am looking for two Rotary Club of Berwick members who would like to get involved with the transition of the Violent Free Families program into our local community. Please contact David Button preferably by email: david.button@rotaryberwick.org or text (because I don't answer my phone when I am working)  0409191822. There is an in person meeting on Saturday, August 12th with the current Board of VFF.

Public Image calling.......
When I joined Rotary nineteen years ago, there was a culture of giving people jobs and pushing them out of their comfort zones. In one way, it was an excellent way to determine how adaptable a person was, usually in a hurry. It was also a way to stir people up to find others to help them do their assigned jobs. Many jobs in Rotary last 12 months, so usually, there are plenty of people before you that has gone through the pain of being out of their depth in a job they have no idea how to do. I guess these days; it is called building resilience.

Stepping "out of your comfort zone" means pushing yourself to do something that feels unfamiliar, challenging, or intimidating. It involves taking action or facing situations that lie beyond what you are accustomed to or what feels safe and familiar. The phrase often describes personal growth and development, as trying new things and facing challenges can lead to learning, increased self-confidence, and expanded capabilities.

When you step out of your comfort zone, you may encounter feelings of nervousness, anxiety, or fear because you are venturing into unknown territory. However, real growth and learning occur in these moments of discomfort and uncertainty. By facing new experiences, you may discover hidden talents, develop resilience, and better understand yourself and the world around you.

From my experience, being put in some challenging and sometimes uncomfortable positions has made me more capable and brought people around me to help me grow in areas I didn't even know I had a talent for.

You have the potential to grow, learn, and appreciate various aspects of life. Embracing new experiences, seeking knowledge, and being open to personal development can lead to a fulfilling and enriched existence. Learning and appreciating the world around you can be transformative and open up opportunities for personal growth and self-discovery. Remember that life is a journey of continuous learning and growth, and embracing it with a positive mindset can lead to a more meaningful and rewarding life.

Are you ready to get out of your comfort zone and contribute to your club's success? Do you have hidden talents that even you don't know you have? Why not join a Committee (preferably the Public Image Task Force) and get some hands-on experience? We all want to get more out of our Rotary membership! The best way to do that is to get a job that may turn a commitment into a passion. Contact David Button at david.button@rotaryberwick.org for more information or see me at a meeting.
