Welcome to our vibrant and relaxed Rotary Club, where community spirit thrives alongside a sense of ease and camaraderie. Picture a place where laughter mingles with purpose and friendships are forged through shared experiences and meaningful endeavours.
Last week Terry fascinated us all with his behind the badge talk.
From stories of his childhood through to football, work life and family we learned just little bit more about the man we know as Terry.
But the part that seemed to generate the most interest was his hobby. It was great to hear about his passion for model aircraft and see the fine examples that he brought along on the night. I think we almost had to turn out he lights to get everyone to leave.
We also learned that he is (very distantly) related to Elvis Presley - but alas it seems we won’t be asking him to sing!
On Saturday, Michele and I attended the Open Day at Donations In Kind in Footscray. The place was really buzzing. It was great to see so many Rotarians and friends out to support the Open Day.
Last week I mentioned the opportunity to send a container load of supplies to support Balibo House and and number of local schools in Balibo, Timor Leste. It was great to confirm that DIK will be able to support us with most of the goods needed and to arrange the container and shipping. Stay tuned to hear more about this project.
As a bonus extra we’ll have a number of children’s bikes to include in the shipment, courtesy of Hendo’s Restos. Through the power of social media, Ian from Hendo’s Resto's saw a post about the Rotary Overseas Relocate Playgrounds project and saw an opportunity to work with us to donate some restored bicycles. These will now get a chance to bring joy to some deserving kids in Balibo.
Ian and his family are our guest speakers for this coming week to tell us all about how Hendo’s Resto's started and what they do. Please make some time come along to hear their story.
Young people continue to be overrepresented in road deaths and serious injuries.
The RYDA program is a whole-school approach that supports schools in teaching the specialty subject of road safety. It includes a one-day practical workshop supported by online and classroom learning.
The RYDA workshop features six sessions of highly engaging practical demonstrations, real-life narratives, videos, quizzes, and interactive role-play. Students typically attend the workshop at a dedicated external venue.
RYDA’s online teachers’ portal, loaded with classroom and homework activities, supports the workshop and gives educators everything they need to continue learning throughout the school year. Students can also access an online revision course through our Learning Management System.
Created for senior high schools, RYDA supports youth development in several areas, including social resilience and anticipating and managing risk. It also gives students a unique opportunity to set road safety goals and build strategies alongside the friends they will most likely be riding with as drivers or passengers.
RYDA is delivered to over 660 high schools throughout Australia and New Zealand, and an average of 60,000 students participate in the program every year.
