Adapting to a new world
We all know that the world has been changing steadily over many years. Attitudes change, technologies change, climates change and our abilities to do what we used to do change. I think that is called progress but it makes it difficult to accept when we are being forced out of a comfort zone.

The announcement yesterday of another lockdown is just another push out of our comfort zone which I suppose by now we should be used to. I would expect there may be many more to come. We must adapt our activities to be flexible and make the most of everything we are doing when we are allowed to do it. So, don't despair that there are a few bumps in the road. Roll with it and see how creative we can be!

Obviously, there will be no Holm Park meeting for 17th February 2021.
That meeting feeling!

Our Club is very fortunate to have our active group of members coming to meetings and supporting our venue. We have a great venue that meets all our needs. It is quiet, private, spacious, has a view and the food is pretty good too. The audiovisual and internet connection setup is perfect and it allows us the flexibility to hold larger functions, such as Vocational Awards and hopefully other functions as the year progresses without the extra hire fees.

The active group is around 27 out of 44 members and I am hoping to see that number rise over time, as we realise our Club is now on a march to make up for the lost time. Our project portfolio is now going organic as members start projects that inspire them and our mix of activities and interests expands.

The interesting thing is that the number of casual Zoomers has evaporated, which has made interaction with our on-screen members a lot more personal and I would like to think more enjoyable. Sure we are Nuff Nuff's with technology, but we make up for it with trying harder and smiling a lot. I think we have some blinking lights and a tripod to swivel the webcam around, no expense spared! PP Isobel is still amazing and keeps the whole show running with no fuss.

But seriously, being part of a meeting improves our Club's ability to punch out some good community work in the areas the members want to work in. There are also these following benefits:
  1. Social interactions, and a lot of it!
  2. Keeping informed of changes in the club's direction, procedures and activities
  3. Getting involved in and being part of the decisions process relating to club projects, club direction
  4. Learning more about specific projects and seeing a bigger Rotary picture.
  5. Volunteering for jobs in the club that interest you and have the ability to ask questions if you are unsure.
  6. Hear from our Club mentors (they probably don't know they exist but our club has several well-grounded Rotary leaders and I know who they are) who can clarify some of the complicated areas of Rotary.
  7. Offer help when it suits your available time even in projects you are not directly involved with.
  8. Get a bit of education and inspiration to get in there and change someone's life.
If you reckon the club bulletin is going to tick all those boxes, forget it. Our club is going organic, which means it can move wherever the members want to take it. The Board are there to make sure we don't extend our resources or allow projects where members have no intention to drive a good result. We must take full responsibility for our professionalism, our conduct and our outcome while upholding the values of Rotary.

Rotary 100 Down Under Peace Pole Project
Posted by Sam McCurdy

This week our guest speaker was Don McQueen from the Rotary E-Club of Rotary Nomads in District 9630.  He spoke of the Peace Pole Project that his Club is involved in with the Rotary Club of Burleigh Griffin in Canberra, to celebrate 100 years of Rotary Down Under.  100 Rotary Clubs or School’s from around Australia are invited by the Rotary Club of Canberra Burley Griffin to become involved in this joint Centenary project.

The Nomads Club have arranged World Peace Poles to be installed at four schools in South Australia, in NSW, in Queensland and one in Melbourne. Their nominated school in Melbourne is Haileybury College.  Don is seeking seeking an expression of interest to see if our Club would accept an offer of ‘partnering’ with the Nomads Club, to install a Peace Pole at the Berwick campus.

The Peace Poles are made from Aluminium and are delivered complete, including the name of the donating Rotary club. The cost is $150.00 plus GST and freight from Geelong.

The project involves 4 - 5 stages, the 5th stage being optional.  They are:
  1. Selecting and negotiating with the school
  2. Establishing the languages to feature on the Peace Pole, based on those predominate at the school
  3. Ordering and installing the Peace Pole
  4. Following up with a World Peace Day Ceremony
  5. Encouraging the school to send a representative to the Canberra Rotary Peace Bell
At each Peace ceremony the words of the Chinese Philosopher Laozi may be spoken.  They are:
  • If there is to be Peace in the World, there must be Peace Between Nations,
  • If there is to be Peace between nations there must be Peace Between Cities,
  • If there must be Peace Between Cities, there must be Peace Between Neighbours,
  • If there must be Peace Between Neighbours, there must be Peace in the home,
  • If there must be in the home,  there must be Peace in the heart.
Peace Poles are planted with the Universal Peace Message “May Peace Prevail on Earth”. They symbolise our common wish for a World at Peace. They stand as a silent vigil for peace reminding us to think and act in the spirit of Peace. The Peace message is written in four languages, one panel on each side of the Peace Pole.

Will our Club be one of the 100 Rotary Clubs to decide to support this idea?

The suggestion that we collaborate with the Rotary E-Club of Rotary Nomads in this R100 Peace Project received strong support from those present. The proposal will be considered by the Board at their meeting on Monday evening.
