Words from the President
Well it’s been a pretty big day today. I helped some of our crew, Jen Marshall, Russell Fellows & Trevor Watson pack up some of the harvested playground equipment. The first part was to load 5 dismantled playgrounds from fellow Mt Martha Rotarian, Wayne Jenkins’ home into 2 caged tandem trailers, take them to a nearby shipping container and pack them carefully into the container. The container is bound for Bougainville, Papua New Guinea. finally laden with in excess of 13 complete playgrounds.

A quick reminder that next week’s meeting, which was usually scheduled for Wednesday, has been transferred to the Tuesday evening “Healthy Minds” forum at Lyndale Secondary College. A quick link to the booking portal is attached & I look forward to our club really supporting this critical initiative.

At our meeting on Wednesday night, Bob & Vicki were kind enough to offer a couple of tickets to the Bee Gees Tribute show on 8 September. We are keen to make this a fun social club get-together, and again I invite everyone to join me & Sharon to join us

I’m off to Adelaide Friday morning to catch up with my son & grandsons for the weekend and look forward to seeing as many of our fellow club members as possible on Tuesday night

Vale Bruce Shaw, Past President, Paul Harris Fellow

On Saturday, 5th August we lost Bruce, a long-term member of the Rotary Club of Berwick and staunch community supporter.
Bruce began his volunteer life at age 18, spending 10 years of membership in Rotaract in Dandenong.  His volunteerism continued when he transitioned to Apex.
Bruce and his wife, Robyn, along with their two small children, moved to Berwick.  Bruce became a member of the Rotary Club of Berwick in September 2000, introduced by Tim Moore.
Always a contributor, he was an active member, willing to assume leadership roles, never shy of bringing new ideas to the table.
In summary his formal roles of responsibility were:
20023 – 2004 Youth Director
2008 – 2009 Membership Director
2009-2010 & 2010-2011 Club Treasurer
2011-2012 Public Relations Director
2013-2014 Club President
Further, Bruce was instrumental in the achievement of the District Membership Development Award for the Club with most new members in District in 2013-2014 and in 2014 he contributed to the running of the District Conference hosted by the Rotary Club of Berwick on behalf of then District Governor, Tim
In 2016 he performed the role of manager of the Berwick Farmers and Craft Market.
Bruce headed up the organisational team for the Berwick College Presentation Balls and was instrumental in the construction of the Rotunda at the Berwick Cemetery.
He was generous with sponsorship through his business, Cruise and Travel Berwick, sponsoring the 2013  Charity Business Dinner, the 2014 District Conference, and the 2014 District Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA)
In testament to his service and commitment to Rotary, the Club recognised him with multiple Paul Harris Fellow recognitions, of which he was very proud.  In support of The Rotary Foundation, Bruce donated strongly, exemplifying support of Rotary’s charity of choice.  For every $1000 US of donation, Bruce earned further Paul Harris Fellow credits.
Bruce involved himself in our activities.  Many fun times were shared in the camaraderie of hosting Australia Day celebrations, Carols by Candelight, helping out at barbeques and cemetery clean ups, being good spirited in our crazy heyday of dress up dinners, dress up themes for conference attendance, and all things fun.   In latter times, Bruce joined the Rotary Fellowship of Recreational Vehicles, carvanning with Rotary friends.
Bruce retained his membership until 30 June this year. He was courageous and determined in the face of his illness, challenging the odds for nine years.  Rest in peace Bruce.

The funeral service for PP Bruce Shaw will be on Monday, 14 August, at 2 pm at the Tobin Brothers chapel in Berwick.

Music and Fun: Our meeting in review
I am not a fan of trivia nights but I know that President Dave is about shaking things up, so I wasn't going to miss it. Dave went above and beyond to bring it all together, personally playing every tune and asking the trivia questions. When Shazam had trouble working out the songs (my table thought we were missing something, so we thought referencing a higher power might give us a clue), we knew we were in for a relaxed and entertaining night.  Jane Moore dressed up the tables beautifully with a vinyl record on a stand and a pretty placemat. It is amazing how much a little detail and thought brings up the mood. Top job Jane!

Guest star Paddy Delaney added some sparkle with his enthusiasm and sense of competition. As Shazam had foreseen, it was a very low score for all of us, maxing out at 16/44. It was a very fun night and I was very glad to have experienced it. There is something special about bonding over good company, good food and music played with love. President Dave is becoming a legend in his own lifetime! I am hoping he might try this again sometime now we know which era he sits in. laugh

Public Image is in the spotlight.

Today, I got this email from my Zone 8 "Public Image Boss", Roslyn Teirney. I noted that David Anderson was mentioned and has stepped up a level since I last talked to him. Jokes aside, our Rotary's Public Image has become a hot topic over the last few years as we stop hiding in the shadows and try to show the world what Rotary does.

We know by experience that when we work and have a meaningful purpose, we are not boring, and almost all of us have a sense of humour. For us to enjoy being community volunteers, we need a steady flow of new members to replace those who have worked hard and bring our ability to do exciting projects forward without burning out existing members. We love having younger people around and I know from my own experience that we have an untapped value that younger folk are missing out on.

Please think about how people around us view Rotary and what you are prepared to do to put our best foot forward. It might be as little as wearing a uniform, getting in a photo of action or trying to tell your story of why you volunteer as a Rotarian. Remember, August is Membership month, so bring a potential member or two to one of our surprisingly enjoyable meetings. Our venue is the best there is, and the food is delicious.

Dear Hamish and David,

I learned yesterday that the April 2024 edition of Rotary Down Under will be dedicated to stories about public image.

So please put on your thinking caps so that we can start to gather resources to submit to RDU to showcase your districts.

Which clubs are really nailing the branding and marketing?  Which projects have been in the news?  Which publications make you proudest of your Rotary colleagues?  Who are some of the great storytellers of the district, who inspire others?

I am hereby delegating to you to get going on this your way but you know where I am if you want to discuss or check anything.

Good luck!  This is a great opportunity.

Also, November's edition is on the theme of The Rotary Foundation.  In 9790, PDG David Anderson is working on that.   For 9820, I'll see what is happening at the next DG Live Zoom.

Thanks to you both for all you do.  Hope the year is going well so far.

RORPS: Playground Relocation
Today, Jen Marshall; Russell Fellows; Dave Anderson & I travelled to Mount Martha.
We met Wayne Jenkins (Rotary Overseas Relocated Playgrounds ‘RORP’ coordinator), who has sixteen harvested playgrounds stored at his property. We loaded two trailers carrying five playgrounds and towed them a short distance to unload the contents into a shipping container. Wayne kindly provided morning tea and refreshments. After a few hours of exercise (including some heavy lifting), our team enjoyed lunch at a local cafe before venturing home for a well-earned nap.
