Rae Mackay - Latrobe Valley Coal Mine Rehabilitation.
Apr 05, 2023 6:30 PM - 8:03 PM
Tonight our guest speaker is Rae Mackay

Rae held the role of Latrobe Valley Mine Rehabilitation Commissioner from June 2017 to June 2020 before becoming the Chair of the Mine Land Rehabilitation Authority Board. Rae has extensive mine rehabilitation related expertise, with more than 40 years’ experience as a practising engineer, hydrogeologist and academic.

Rehabilitation of the Latrobe Valley Brown Coal Mine: the story so far.

The Inquiry arising from the Hazelwood Mine Fire in 2014 identified mine rehabilitation and the lack of appropriate frameworks for rehabilitation as significant issues for the Latrobe valley mines and for the region.  Recommendations were made on a way forward in terms of policy and legislation that have been rolled out over the last 5 years.  This has been set against a backdrop of early power station closures that have occurred (Hazelwood) and have been brought forward significantly (Yallourn and Loy Yang).  This presentation will give a brief snapshot of the key issues and the current status of rehabilitation planning for the Valley.

Quilts of Valour
Apr 19, 2023 6:30 PM - 8:03 PM

Following the tragic loss and injury of Defence Personnel in Afghanistan in 2010, Harkaway local, Helen Comport, learnt of the need to reach out to wounded ADF personnel and honour their sacrifice for serving Australia on a combat deployment. The quilt, made to wrap veteran or Defence personnel, was such a powerful symbol in a traumatic time that it felt like an important issue that Australia should become involved in.

Helen learnt how touched her son was when he received a quilt made by Americans following critical injuries he sustained in Afghanistan. Following this tragedy, Helen decided to set up an Australian group to recognise veterans and Defence Personnel touched by war by presenting them withquilts.

Tonight we will hear Helen’s Quilt’s of Valour Australian story.

Birthing Kit Assembly Night
May 10, 2023 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Tonight we will be assembling and packing 200 birthing kits for the Birthing Kit Foundation.

Birthing kit assembly commences a 5:30pm. A regular club meeting and dinner will follow the birthding kit assembly.

The concept of the Birthing Kit began in 1995, when Adelaide Doctor, Joy O’Hazy, attended them United Nations Fifth World Conference on Women and heard Sally Field speaking about a similar kit she had seen in Nepal. With the idea that hygiene was key to improving maternal and newborn survival in low resource settings, Joy developed the Birthing Kit – a small zip-lock bag containing six basic and clean items to be distributed to women and birthing attendants in low-resource and emergency settings.

In partnership with the Adelaide Hills Zonta Club, Joy and the dedicated volunteers began assembling and distributing these simple kits around the world. The scale and impact of this project continued to grow and what was once known as the ‘Zonta Birthing Kit Project’ transformed into the Birthing Kit Foundation Australia in September 2006.

Since our establishment, the team at BKFA has worked to extend and enhance our reach, forming strong partnerships with many Field Partners in the Sub-Saharan Africa, Asian and Indo-Pacific regions. Our work has expanded from the original Birthing Kit Program to a range of In-Country Programs that engage individuals, families and communities to create sustainable change and improve maternal and newborn health outcomes.
