This week we are visited by guest speakers from Victoria Police Legacy Rotary World of Difference (WOD) responds to local areas of needs in Cambodia with continuous, sustainable projects, providing safe water, sanitation, education and maternal child and health. Supporting these WOD has been taking participants on combined cultural and volunteering trips to Cambodia since November 2011. World of Difference is a volunteering project of several Rotary Clubs. There are no paid employees. Project work employs local Cambodians and will be monitored continuously and sustainably year after year, tour after tour. In November 2023, 19 Victoria Police Young Adult Legatees (aged 18-25) and 4 VPL Leaders went to Cambodia on an incredible personal development, humanitarian experience during a WOD tour. The group raised an outstanding $33,000 to support several humanitarian projects in villages surrounding Siem Reap. All funds raised went to directly to aiding the people of Cambodia. Rotary volunteers accompanied the Victoria Police Young Adult Legatees, with no fundraising money being used for administration. The tour not only changed the lives of impoverished Cambodians but also had a profound impact on the Victoria Police Young Adult Legatees.

This week we have Anton and Bob along to prsent to us on RYDA. Formerly Rotary Youth Driver Awareness, RYDA is more than a program, it’s partnership which supports teachers on the journey as they provide their students with the tools and understanding they need to see themselves as active, responsible road citizens. Taking, largely, a student inquiry learning approach, RYDA becomes part of the school culture from the first to last day of a young person’s high school life. Beyond that, RYDA provides students with the tools, habits and motivation to take action and stay safe on our roads as both drivers and passengers throughout their lives. Long term change will only be realised where educational materials support each-other and key messages are repeated over time. RYDA, a program professionally developed by leading learning organisation, Road Safety Education Limited (RSE), is designed to complement the high school curriculum. RYDA features a highly engaging and memorable one-day workshop which front-loads students’ understanding of road safety. The workshop sessions are designed to be held in small classroom sized groups (approximately 25 students) and are led by a team of trained facilitators including Police, driving instructors and other community sector specialists. RYDA is delivered to over 660 high schools throughout Australia and New Zealand, with an average of 40,000 students participating in the RYDA Program every year. |
