That container also had equipment for other projects in Balibo. As you may pick up, Rotary, through the efforts of Ricardo Krauskopf has built an effective network in Balibo which has started to reach into the government. The Rotary Club of Berwick is a strong part of the Balibo story. Hopefully we will still support the work we have started into the future. Belola Opening DayBelola Opening DayBelola School with 3 classrooms and a teachers' roomBelola School toilets

Visit to Balibo in Timor Leste I visited Balibo in June along with Geoff and Di Double, Roger Thornton, Greg Peck (RC Pakenham), Doug Hemmingway (RC Port Melbourne) and David Dippie (RC Keilor and Donations in Kind). As you may be aware, our Club has been part of some amazing things in the Balibo area. We have been part of creating a Dental Clinic within the Balibo House building and fitting out a Convention Centre which was built through funding by the Victorian Government. Our Club has been actively involved with Donations in Kind pickups (some of which are now in Balibo) and also purchasing exercise books, pens and pencils for overseas schools. Sounds pretty cool don't you think, but are we making a difference? Short answer is YES! Everything that we have put money towards and the help we have given has been gratefully received and most of all appreciated beyond belief. Timor Leste is a young country. There are not a lot of older people as most were killed in recent conflic

David Dippie from Donations In Kind (DIK) spoke about the Balibo Project Partnership. The clubs in this project are Berwick, Carlton, Keilor, Pakenham and Port Melbourne. Balibo, in Timor Leste is one of the poorest countries in the world and the government is fully supportive of Rotary. The project involved building a dental clinic that can be used for other medical uses, a new kitchen that will support a café and dental nurse accommodation. Not only Rotary has provided money but other organisations such as the Melbourne Dental Hospital contributed. They supplied chairs. Many dentists have volunteered to go over and assist. From a Rotary perspective this project is now complete. The new goal is to supply educational facilities and support. 6 Kindergartens, 23 Primary Schools and 6 High Schools have been identified for help. Local structures are in place were a local school teacher is identi

We have had a letter from Roger Thornton (DIK District Chair) regarding the Balibo project: Thank you, your President and your Club for your support. As we have discussed it is not only what we do it is also what we cause to happen. Collectively we made a lot happen and as we continue to prove we can achieve much more when we work as a team. Take pride in what you have helped accomplish. This time last year no one imagined that two wonderful people would commit six months of their lives to support the Balibo community. Like your club some of the others who helped this year, support for Balibo was not part of their plan. You can celebrate being in all of the achievements but you should be particularly pleased with the Balibo 5 Kindergarten Extension. Without your support it would not have been completed this year. Ross assures us to will be complete before he returns home. If your Club wishes to be a partner in the New Year it would be our pleasure to share the journey with you

Posted by David Button on Feb 25, 2021 Rotary is a great organisation to transform lives through cooperation. For example, the Rotary Clubs of Berwick, Pakenham and Mt Eliza (in District 9820) played a part in creating a dental clinic for the people in the Balibo District of Timor Leste. We were part of a bigger picture with Rotary Clubs far and wide, RAWCS, DIK, the Balibo Trust, Palms Australia, the Timor Leste Government, a band of volunteer Australian dentists and the local village elders. Each group worked together to bring dentistry and oral hygiene to an area that had previously never had a dentist. When I visited the clinic in 2018 with Roger Thornton (RC Pakenham), Geoff and Di Double (RC Berwick), David Dippie (RC Keilor) and Doug Hemmingway (RC Port Melbourne), it was just getting going. The two people in blue above, Sidone and Felix were the first dental nurses tra

A very interesting and informative presentation was provided by some of the group of Rotarians who visited Timor Leste in June this year. The group included representatives from the Rotary Clubs of Berwick, Pakenham, Keilor and Port Melbourne. They visited Balibo and Belola travelling in 4-wheel drive vehicles along generally unmade roads. Balibo is 75 Km from Dili airport and is only 10 Km from the Indonesian border. It is infamous for the fact that Indonesian Special Forces killed five journalists from Australian TV networks in 1975. 70% of the country's infrastructure was destroyed in the Indonesian invasion and 130,000 - 150,000 people died. Therefore, Timor Leste is a new and developing nation with very little resources and a strong need to develop education and health. Habitual chewing of the betel-nut has led to a signicant problem with dental hygiene. Two years ago, Rotary funded the formation of a dental clinic in Balibo House, which had been purchased by the Vic
