Hi everyone
I have to say it’s been a pretty busy few days for me as our Nation gets closer to ANZAC Day.
On Thursday I attended an ANZAC Day luncheon and ceremony where we heard from Inspector Gerry Cartright from Victoria Police, Gerry is a descendant of family war veterans who fought at Gallipoli. Gerry joined the Air Cadets at age 14, later serving as a Reservist with 21 Squadron (RAAF) and 4/19 Prince of Wales Light Horse (Army) before becoming a Royal Australian Navy Clearance Diver. Gerry reminded us of the ANZAC traditions and gave some real insights into life as a serviceman.
On Friday I was fortunate enough to volunteer with the RSL by selling ANZAC badges and I was just astounded by the generosity of the public. There were a number of people who, whilst walking past just pulled out cash and gave it without 2nd thought and asked nothing in return. It was truly humbling and I also got to hear some of the stories from people of all ages about why ANZAC Day means so much to them.
This leads me into our next Meeting where we are so fortunate to have an old mate of mine, Ray Heathcote from RSL Berwick come and be our guest speaker. Ray is a Vietnam Veteran and has been very active in the community through his involvement in the RSL and his true care for veterans. Some will know Ray (he is Gus’ next door neighbour) and most will know of him. He has been a cartoonist for the local paper for as long as I can remember. He will add some real texture to our meeting as we pay our respects to the ANZAC legacy.
I am also grateful to the 10 other Club Members who have volunteered to help out with the ANZAC Dawn Service event at Bunjil Place on ANZAC Day. Thank you for your help and service.
If you were not at our meeting this week and you would like to help out next Thursday please let me know ASAP so I can let Tim from Narre Warren Rotary Club know
Have a great weekend all
