Welcome to the 33rd edition of Spoke ‘n’ Words.

Members and friends of the Rotary Club of Berwick were out and about this week doing
what they do best - engaging with the local community, supporting local causes and
making a difference.

On Friday 16th March, we held our annual St John of God Hospital Golf Day fundraiser at the Cardinia Beaconhills Golf Links, which was well supported by various local businesses and many keen golfers from around the Casey and Cardinia area. From all accounts it was a perfect day capped off by a wonderful evening of fellowship and networking over a meal and a drink or two! I must congratulate the Golf Day Committee for what was a successful and professionally run fundraising event. Thank you to all those who came on board as sponsors and to all the golfers, without whom there would simply be no event! Your participation will help us make a difference in our community.
Our guest speaker on the night was Lisa Norman, CEO of the St John of God Hospital in Berwick. Lisa told us about the amazing work being done at the hospital to provide patients with a premier care facility and thanked the Rotary Club for its ongoing partnership with the Hospital. Also present were City of Casey Councillors Susan Serey and Amanda Stapledon. Addressing the audience, Councillor Stapledon acknowledged the great contribution that the Rotary Club of Berwick has made and continues to make to the local community and praised the strong relationship between the Club and Council that has endured since the Club’s foundation in 1961.

Kay Morland was also on hand to award the inaugural Michael (Mick) Morland Perpetual Trophy to the winning team. Kay said that it was “truly touching to have Mick honoured in such a way” and that he would be “in utter disbelief at the kindness, generosity and consideration shown by the members of the Rotary Club of Berwick” to the Morland family since Mick’s tragic passing. Kay continued that “Mick loved a game of golf back in the day, and that he would be humbled at having a perpetual trophy named in honour”.

Following the Golf Day event, Councillor Stapledon took the opportunity to bring the Commit to Casey campaign to our attention. This City of Casey campaign is the first of its kind and seeks to engage our State politicians of all persuasions, to commit to fixing our roads and the Cranbourne rail line.  Please read the main article for details.

This coming Wednesday, 21st March, there is no meeting at Holm Park. We will instead meet at the Berwick Bowling Club for the annual challenge between the Rotary Club of Berwick and the Rotary Club of Monbulk. Could this be the year we bring the Shield home? The experts say that this is our best chance in a very long time to take the Shield back from Monbulk’s firm grip. After all is said and done, it is the good old Rotary fellowship that will have pride of place!

In concluding I would like to send our best wishes to our members and friends who have not been travelling too well lately and have been unable to attend Club meetings and functions. You remain in our thoughts and we hope to see you among us soon.

I hope you enjoy this week’s edition of the bulletin.
