We had lots of guests at our meeting this week but Graham wasn’t there to do the Emergency Evacuation Procedure, so I had to improvise.

Luckily there wasn’t an emergency because, although I told everyone where the emergency exits were, I didn’t inform them about the Assembly points in the car parks.  We could have been milling around at the bottom of the stairs for hours.

It was a delight to meet the two young ladies from Kids Under Cover.  Sheryn Cooper and Amy-Lou Cowdroy-Ling came to our Club to give a talk on what they are doing to prevent youth homelessness.

After Sheryn’s presentation, I asked her how KUC were able to ensure that the studios that they built were used by the young people they were intended for.

Sheryn explained that they monitor the studios by using site visits and surveys.  She also told me that they started trialling a new service which involved placing studios on foster carer’s properties for emergency youth accommodation.

I thought the Donate Your Car®  was a great initiative.  Had I known about it, I would have donated my old Ford.  Here is the link if you have a car you could donate: https://www.kuc.org.au/get-involved/donate-your-car/

I had the opportunity to chat to Tara Wilkinson, our 2019 Outbound Youth Exchange Student, her Mum Denise and brother Braden.  Tara gave her first presentation to the Club. Afterwards she told me she was very nervous but I couldn’t tell, could you?  I thought she did a terrific job and I believe Tara will represent our Club well in her Exchange year.

Tara is hoping to go to the USA for her 2019 Exchange.  Denise is understandably anxious about her daughter being away for so long.  I think Braden will miss her too.

Gaetano gave us an interesting talk on engaging youth in Rotary.  He had a prize for the person who knew what WIIFM meant.  There were disappointed mutterings from the crowd that there were no poo biscuits.  However, everyone seemed to enjoy Gaetano’s presentation.

Rosemary Hughes is collecting the children’s books this year for distribution to Casey North Community Information and Support Service and Edrington Park Child Care and Preschool.  Please bring new, or excellent quality used children’s books to the meetings up to mid-September.  Di Double will collect the books if Rosemary is away from the meetings.  The books can range for ages from pre-school to teenage.

DGE Adrian Froggatt gave us an update on the District Conference in his year.  The theme of the Conference will be 'Break the Chains'.

As always it was great to hear the buzz of conversation in the room during fellowship breaks.  It was a shame to have to interrupt them.

That’s it from me for this week.

Over and out.
