President's Ramblings

This past week we farewelled Past President John Rosenthal. John was inducted into the Rotary Club of Berwick in 2003 and served in a range of different board positions including as President in 2009/10. As we heard in John’s eulogy, Rotary was a big part of John’s life from the time he joined. Sadly, dementia robbed us all of the John that the club knew and loved in his latter years but I’m told that a smile still came to his face when our bulletin and the articles from the RDU magazine were read to him. It was great to see the turnout of club members at John’s funeral and especially the Rotary Guard of Honour that sent him on his way. Our thoughts are with Helen and the family in this difficult time.

On a lighter note we also had a wonderful turnout for our night of wine and cheese tasting at Lets Unwine in Berwick, followed by dinner at Sandros.

Lets Unwine had a great selection of wines for us to sample and some great deals to restock our cellars. Dinner at Sandros was enjoyed by all as we partook of good food and enjoyed the fellowship of members and partners.

Thanks to both Lets Unwine and Sandros for taking care of us on the night and to all those who attended and make it a really enjoyable occasion.

Looking Ahead: Special Guest Next Week!

Next week’s meeting (April 23rd) we will have a very special guest speaker, local identity and historian Neil Lucas who will be enlightening us with some local history of Berwick and in particular the history of some of the street names in Berwick. Its sure to be an interesting night. Family and friends are always welcome. We will also be joined by a few members of our neighbouring Rotary Clubs.

Inner Wheel Trivia Night

The Inner Wheel club of Berwick are once again holding their Trivia Night Fundrasier in support of “All For Billie” which aids research into Enterovirus Treatment by the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity.

“All For Billie” was started by a mother who lost her baby at 11 days as the Enterovirus was detected too late. This virus can cause sepsis, myocarditis, meningitis and encephalitis as well as deaths in unborn and newborn babies. Research is carried out by the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity.

Please see the flyer later in the bulletin and consider putting together a table of family and friends to support this great cause.

Berwick College Presentation Balls

The Presentation Balls this year are being held on May 14th and 15th.
We are looking for 10 club members each night to attend and help out with the running of the event. It’s always a great night, so why not jump on board.

Cheers,
Andrew

DG Partner Project Fundraising

This year, Leanne Byron’s 2024-2025 Rotary District Governor Partner Project is raising funds to support the Monash Children's Cancer Centre, a remarkable institution dedicated to helping children with cancer.

The goal is to raise $100,000 to train an in-house Apheresis Clinical Nurse Consultant who will provide life-saving treatments. While it’s a significant sum, this support can make a profound difference for many children, offering them not just a chance at life but a brighter future.

Monash Children's Hospital already has the equipment, facilities and medical expertise to provide Apheresis Therapy to our young patients, but the key is in the in-house Apheresis Clinical Nurse Consultant to unlock the delivery of the program. Apheresis therapy will also be a vital part of delivering personalised "Precision medicine", which is the future of cancer treatment. That future isn't far away, and providing this specialised nursing role now will equip Monash Children's Hospital for many years to come.

Please help us fund a specialist Apheresis Nurse to improve the quality of care and survival chances for children with high-risk cancers.
