President's Ramblings
Last week we had a late change of guest speaker as D9815 Youth chair Dr Daryl Moran was unable to attend at the last minute. Fortunately, we had an excellent stand-in. Daryl’s wife Jenny, president of RC Rowville-Lysterfield, gave us an overview of the range of youth programs available across the district. We even learned of some programs that are new to us in D9815 as each of the previous districts D9180 and D9820 has some programs that were unique to those districts.

On Friday I had the opportunity to attend the graduation of Intake 63 of Operation Newstart Casey and to assist in the handing out of certificates to the eight graduates. I continue to be amazed by the great work that this organisation does. Their program has achieved great success with students who are lacking engagement at school and in serious danger of dropping out, taking them on a journey of self-discovery and re-engaging them with their schooling. It was particularly heartening to hear the story of a previous graduate who participated in the program two years ago. From being on the verge of giving up at school she is now completing year 12 and planning on a future as a teacher.

September is the Rotary month of Basic Education and Literacy
Education presents very different challenges in different countries.
In Australia we take education for granted. An education is available to everyone. Organisations like Operation Newstart play a role in keeping that available to those who are struggling to engage.

Worldwide the picture is very different.  More than 775 million people world-wide over the age of 15 are illiterate. That’s 17 percent of the world’s adult population.
Rotary’s goal is to strengthen the capacity of communities to support basic education and literacy, reduce gender disparity in education, and increase adult literacy. We support education for all children and literacy for children and adults.

Next meeting we have guest speakers involved in a Rotary program that does just that.
Lauren and Lex are from Victoria Police Legacy (VPL). In 2023 VPL sent a team to Cambodia as part of the Rotary World Of Difference Program. We’ll be hearing about the great work the team did in assisting a number of Cambodian schools, improving access and resources and making an education more accessible to the local community. Its sure to be an interesting presentation.
