President's Ramblings
What a busy week it’s been at the Rotary Club of Berwick.

We started with our guest speaker Desmond telling us all about Family Violence and the legal system. A very sobering topic indeed and a community problem that is clearly in need of a solution.

Saturday was a busy day indeed with our triple header working bee. We started with a tidy up of the community garden at the Langmore Centre where the main tasks were some pruning, removal of the surplus oak leaves and spreading around some ‘food’ for the plants. It was a bit of a whirlwind with it all being done within an hour and the garden looking a little brighter.

From there attention turned to the Edwards’ house where a general garden tidy-up was in order including tree trimming pruning and weeding. Work was well underway when those that had come from the Langmore Garden arrived. With around 15 members and friends in attendance it was a great example of many hands making light work and the garden was soon looking spic and span. We even managed to stop and enjoy a very nice morning tea.

Finally we moved on to enjoy a BBQ and some fellowship at Lou and Louise’s. Lunch was followed by some firewood splitting, where thankfully Geoff’s hydraulic wood splitter managed to do most of the hard work.

On Sunday president elect  Jen and I attended the Rotary Community Group meeting for our Community Group. Ten of the 12 clubs in our group were in attendance and it was a great opportunity to meet and chat to those from the other clubs. We discussed some of the great things clubs are doing and some of the challenges facing Rotary clubs. As a group, a common theme was how do we grow and diversify our membership. Other key themes were increasing the profile of Rotary and of course supporting the many worthwhile causes. We discussed a number of ideas for a Community Group-wide project than could address these areas. The overwhelming support was for the running of a cultural food festival where we could invite various cultural groups to showcase the foods from their cultures. It would also present a unique opportunity to showcase Rotary to these groups and to attendees of the festival, whilst also providing the potential of fundraising to support a worthwhile cause.
The project will only work as a Community Group project with the support of all clubs in our group. I’ll be talking a little more about this at our next meeting.

This week we go on a journey of exploration as Isobel enlightens us with the tales of her Antarctic adventure.

Cheers,

Andrew
ROTARIANS AT WORK!

A very big thank you to all the members and friends who volunteered to help with our three Working Bees on Saturday.

A small, but industrious team worked at Langmore Centre Community Garden, pruning, raking and completing a seasonal clean up.

Concurrently, a slightly larger group of members and friends converged at Pat and Fred’s house for some weeding, pruning, and general garden maintenance, with a bit of fellowship included, thanks to our caterers. Who could refuse freshly made egg sandwiches, chocolate brownies and lemon slice!

We then moved on to Louise and Lou’s place for some firewood splitting, even more fellowship, followed by a delicious BBQ, thanks to chef Jack!

The Langmore Centre Community Garden is, once again, looking great, Pat and Fred have a garden they are proud of and Louise and Lou have a woodshed that is now filled to the brim, in readiness for next Winter.

Three jobs well done, thanks to everyone who assisted in any way!
