A Changeover to remember
Every year, Rotary Clubs across the world change Presidents. The change of presidency is seen as a significant event within Rotary and is considered a rite of passage into leadership for the incoming president. The outgoing presidents may reflect on their accomplishments during their tenure, and the incoming president may share their collective vision (this time) and goals for the upcoming year.

With the support of partner Sharon, his extended family and friends, Dave Anderson has stepped up to become our 63rd President. Undoubtedly, Dave will bring some new ideas and concepts to our Club.

Rotary is an exciting and fulfilling organisation to belong to. All our Club members welcome Dave as our new leader. Together with the input of his Board, it should be a great year to make a difference in the world through Rotary.

Rotary: Things to do, people to see
As Rotarians at the Rotary Club of Berwick, we find ourselves doing some personally fulfilling activities which can make a difference to someone. Most of the time, we don't know that we have made an impact until years later, and by knowing that we keep doing what we like doing. Below is a presentation of what we have been up to in 2022-23 under our four Presidents: Gus Dominguez, Tim Moore, Geoff Double and Jack Kraan.

Time to GROW

The Rotary Club of Berwick has worked hard in the community for over 60 years. Over that time, our community has expanded exponentially, but our ability to meet demand has not.

There are two Rotary Clubs nearby, Casey and Narre Warren. Each of these clubs has its own culture and outlook. That makes Rotary so great to be part of; each club is unique and each has its own focus on the community.

Currently, our club has many opportunities to support the community and bring a sense of satisfaction to the members. The only problem is that we don't have enough members to take on leadership roles and support the club in converting opportunities into reality.

I invite you to think about the community-minded people you know. Invite them to a meeting. Tell them or show them what our club has done over the last year: Share our slideshow: 2022-23 Slideshow, our website: www.rotaryberwick.org, our Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/rotaryberwick.org or share our bulletins CLICK HERE. Bring a friend, propose a member, and grow our club so we can do more good in the world.

Grasmere Tree Planting
photos supplied by David Button and Jen Marshall
What a great day was had last Sunday, 16th July, at Grasmere Reserve, planting a lazy 1300 trees.

Through the work of Jen Marshall to organise the day, we had a strong turnout of planters. Diana Gomez-Fullaway took it upon herself to invite the local Joey's and Cub troops to help out, and they proved extremely willing helpers. The St Margarets School and Berwick Grammar School Interact Club were well represented. which was very pleasing because we oldies need all the help we can get!

With a strong crew of 63 planters and soft ground, the trees were planted in under one hour. The work was easy and enjoyable, with plenty of time for a chat, meeting new people and even time to spend teaching the younger ones how to plant a tree.

Afterwards, there was a well-catered BBQ with all the trapping of a Rotary BBQ feast. PP Jack Kraan, assisted by Ann and Michele, cooked up a storm.
Funno setting a good example by digging a lot of holes in a hurry!
The Berwick Grammar Crew (Interact) It was great to see James McCurdy (son of Sam, grandson of "our" Sam) there working hard.
President (now Past President) Jack doing what he does best.
Sam is our Super Star
Congratulations, Sam on a well-deserved PHF + 3

Sam was inducted into our Club in June 2011, 12 years ago and has been a very active member since then.  He has served on the Board on multiple occasions and led or actively participated in many of the Club’s committees.
He has served as secretary and Director of Public Image and Public Relations.  In these roles he wrote many newspaper articles about the Club’s activities and managed to get most of them published by the Star News Group, a feat not readily achieved by many before him.
Sam has been instrumental in the activities of the Rotary Berwick and District Benevolent Society as its secretary and organiser of the Society’s Christmas Appeal.
Spoken Words, our Club bulletin has been skillfully edited by Sam. Earlier this year when our bulletin editor could no longer undertake the role, I tapped Sam on the shoulder, and he readily accepted the role again.  Sam has always been ready to help out.
Other of Sam’s activities have included Membership Director, National Youth Science Forum Chair, the Australia Day committee and our annual Golf Day committee.  Hopefully I have not left too many out.
Sam is very community minded, always wears a smile and will step up to help anyone and is always eager to volunteer his time.  He always puts in 100% to whatever he does and possesses all the qualities of a PHF recipient in his commitment to Service above Self.
Sam, it gives me great pleasure to present to you, on behalf of the Trustees of The Rotary Foundation, this emblem of a Paul Harris Fellow, that being
This is the 4th Paul Harris Fellow recognition received by Sam.
This has been given to you in recognition of, and appreciation of, tangible and significant assistance given for the furtherance of better understanding and friendly relations between peoples of the world.

ROYCE ABBEY AWARD PRESENTED TO ONE OF OUR OWN!

Judy, Amber, David and Saffron Button

One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of a Royce Abbey award to a much-deserved member of the Rotary Club of Berwick!
In the late 80’s Royce Abbey, a member of the Rotary Club of Essendon, became the third Australian Rotarian to serve as President of Rotary International. In recognition of Royce Abbey’s leadership, District Governors from around the world established The Royce and Jean Abbey Endowed Fund within The Rotary Foundation.
The fund has financed nearly thirty Royce and Jean Abbey Vocational Scholarships, giving farmers, teachers and community leaders from the Asia Pacific Region and beyond, the opportunity to gain practical skills in Australia. Each scholarship provides $10,000USD for up to three months and covers travel, accommodation and community development in areas consistent with Rotary’s Seven Areas of Focus.
The Royce Abbey Award is granted by a Rotary Club to one of its members to recognise their Enthusiasm and Commitment to Rotary, consistent with Royce Abbey’s Presidential theme of ‘Put Life into Rotary, Your Life’.
The contribution of $1000 by a Club, which accompanies each award, means that the Royce and Jean Abbey Vocational Scholarship can continue to grow and make a difference to communities in developing countries.
It was a great honour to present this award is a member of our Club.
The list of his activities and achievements is too long to mention, and we would have been there all night to list them all, but they include active Rotary membership for almost 19 years, ongoing support to The Rotary Foundation, International projects and support of Donations in Kind, National projects, such as organising matching grants for Blaze-Aid trailers, District projects and sponsorship support and last, but not least, two years in a row as President of our great Club during a very challenging time.
Congratulations to a very worthy recipient, Past President David Button, on receiving the Royce Abbey Award.   It was great to see that David’s wife, Judy and both his daughters, Saffron and Amber, were there to share this moment with David.
