President's Ramblings
Last week our guest speaker was Jed Davey. Jed is a year 12 student at Berwick College. He was sponsored by our club to attend the National Youth Science Forum in Brisbane in January this year. Jed told us about the NYSF program and some of the activities that they participated in. Jed had an interest in forensics and cyber securing prior to attending and was particularly keen on the cyber presentations made at NYSF by the Australian Defence Force, so much so that he’s already started his application the ADF. We wish Jed well for his future and he’ll be sure to keep us updated on his progress. A fun fact that was revealed on the night was that Jed’s mother Stephanie also attended NTSF back in 1999.  Our incoming president Jan Marshall was also an NYSF attendee.

St John of God Gardens

On Thursday night a few of us attended at St John of God Berwick hospital to have a look at the garden areas that are wanting some help with. There are four areas in total that are in need of attention. Water is a coming theme in all areas. It was generally felt that if we can sort the watering situation, then the other aspects will start to fall into place. We’ll be putting together a plan of attack. Stay tuned as we’ll be organising a series of working bees in the coming months.

Presentation Balls

Dance Practice is underway for the 40th Anniversary Berwick College Presentation Balls.  Ticket sales have commenced and are moving along quite nicely.  The balls will be held across two nights, 14th and 15th of May. As per previous years we will be looking to have around 10 Rotarians present each night to assist with the smooth running.

Clean-up Australia Day

Last Sunday was the annual Clean-Up Australia Day. This year our event was held at Berwick Springs where a small but highly efficient contingent worked tirelessly to remove the rubbish that had collected in the parkland.

BBQ Trailer

Great News, the BBQ trailer is complete and was picked up on Saturday and it is looking fabulous. For those who attend this weeks meeting you’ll get a chance to have a sneak peek. We still need to organise the signwriting to promote the club and recognise our sponsors. A big thankyou to the Bendigo Bank Community Bank Beaconsfield for their generous sponsorship that has made this new BBQ trailer possible.

Nossal High School Mock Interviews

Mock Interviews are once again being held a Nossal High School. The event, to be held on Thursday March 20th, gives the year 10 and 11 students the chance to experience a job interview situation. If you can assist on the day as an interviewer we’d love to have you on board. More details and the link to register can be found at:

Next Meeting – DG Visit

This week is our official District Governor visit. DG Colin Byron and Leanne will be visiting to give us an update on what is happening in the district. Both Colin and Leanne have been regular visitors to our club and we look forward to having them along this week.
Come along and join us. There may even be some ‘special prizes’ on the night.

Cheers,
Andrew

March is Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Month

Clean water, sanitation and good hygiene is a human right. When people, especially children, have access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene, they lead healthier and more successful lives. We don’t just build wells and walk away. Rotary members integrate water, sanitation, and hygiene into education projects. When children learn about disease transmission and practice good hygiene, they miss less school. And they can take those lessons home to their families, expanding our impact.

Clean water is a basic human right that many are often denied. There are 2.5 billion people in the world that lack access to improved sanitation and 748 million people that don’t have clean drinking water. Nearly 1400 children die each day from diseases caused by lack of sanitation and unsafe water. When people have access to clean water, they live healthier and more productive lives.

The Water & Sanitation Rotarian Action Group (WASRAG) was formed in 2007 by a group of Rotarians, recognized by Rotary International, and focused on WASH projects.
Since then it has facilitated many hundreds of projects – helping clubs find partners, ensuring sustainability, stressing the importance of a needs-driven approach, and developing best practices. We encourage a holistic, integrated approach in which water is not the end in itself, but is rather the means to a better life and livelihood in the community.
Most importantly, WASRAG links water and sanitation to improved hygiene, better health, and empowerment of the community – especially women, irrigation and agriculture, education and literacy and, ultimately, child mortality.
In 2015, the United Nations introduced their new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty and promote prosperity while protecting the environment and addressing climate change. Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 on water and sanitation encourages us to address universal access to drinking water and sanitation along with improved water management to protect ecosystems and build resiliency.

Rotary members are committed to reaching the water and sanitation SDG through projects like building wells, installing rainwater harvesting systems, and teaching community members how to maintain new infrastructure.

During March, Rotary Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Month, we’re celebrating our commitment to create healthier communities by supplying clean water and sanitation facilities to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
