President's Ramblings

Wow, what a great weekend at the district conference where 12 members of the Rotary Club of Berwick trekked to Bendigo for a weekend of fun, fellowship and inspiration.

In the pre-conference activities, several of us enjoyed an afternoon of High Tean and a tour at Fortuna Villa, an amazing historical property built during the head gold rush days.

Several club members enjoyed a Friday night dinner at MS Batterhams Restaurant.

The conference start started on Saturday morning with Chinese dragons and finished on Sunday with opera singers and had a fabulous array of guest speakers in between.

We were skilfully led through the program by our MC, magician and past DG Jonathan Usher.

We learned about an unsung Victorian hero Dr. John Cade who discovered the first practical treatment for a mental disorder through the use of lithium to treat bipolar disorder. We learned about apheresis and the use of stem cells to improve the success rate of children’s cancer treatment and how the DG partner project aims to bring an apheresis program to the Monash Children’s Hospital Cancer Centre. We heard about My Room and the great work this organisation does for Children’s Cancer. We heard about the Mercy Ships program and how this is bringing vital medical treatment that is taken for granted in western countries to places such as Sierra Leone and Madagascar. We heard about Interplast and how it is conducting life changing surgeries and training doctors in developing countries.  We heard about how Disaster Aid Australia through its Sky Hydrant projects is touching on all of Rotary’s seven areas of focus. We learned about a program that is training returned service veterans to work in rural communities to assist in harvesting of crops. We also learned about how a simple game of Table Tennis can help to abolish moderna slavery thou an event simple known as a Pong-A-Thon.  We heard about the Jared Dunscombe Foundation honouring Jared by raising funds and awareness for projects that directly benefit young people in need. This is but a selection of the speakers all of which had inspiring stories to tell. We were also fortunate to have RIPPR Bharat Pandya representing Rotary Internation President Stephanie Urchick. Bharat is an amazing speaker with an equally amazing CV of the Rotary positions he has held.

We were entertained by the Melbourne Soul and Gospel Choir who treated us to a varied mix of gospel and pop songs, and ended the conference with trio of Opera singers who added a little bit of theatre to their performance.

The Gala ball on Saturday night had the theme of ‘Rotary Rocks’ and The Rotary Club of Berwick members were aptly dressed in our fancy guitar shirts.

Alas we did not win the best dressed award, being soundly outclassed by The Rotary Clubs of Belgrave & Emerald who were dressed as members of Kiss and The Rotary Club of Rye who tool the theme of ‘Rotary Rocks’ very literally and came dressed as ‘rocks’.
Finally we learned that next year’s conference with the theme of ‘Be Inspired’ will be held in Hobart Tasmania on March 13th-15th. Time to start thinking about a Rotary Club of Berwick Tassie tour.
Ona sadder note, we pass on our condolences to Jack and Ann Kraan and their family on the passing of Jack’s mother Willy on Saturday. Jack and Ann had to leave the conference early on hearing the news of her worsening condition. Thankfully there were able to make in back before she passed away.

I have received thanks from Nossal High School for our assistance at their Mock Interviews this year, They have already started planning for next year. We have also been asked by Nossal to run the BBQ for their annual athletics carnival on April 30th. We will be seeking a few volunteers to assist on the day.

This year our club will celebrate its 64th birthday. We’re planning to do it in style with a Progressive Dinner. Block out Saturday evening May 3rd in your calendars and stay tuned for more details in coming weeks.

This week we will be having a fun and games night, so come along for a littler light hearted fun.

April 16th will be our annual bowls challenge against RC Monbulk. Bowls master Funno will be putting together the teams. We are calling all regular bowlers; part time bowlers; very, very occasional bowlers and anyone who has never bowled before. If you fit one of those categories we need you on our team.

Cheers,
Andrew

DG Partner Project Fundraising

This year, Leanne Byron’s 2024-2025 Rotary District Governor Partner Project is raising funds to support the Monash Children's Cancer Centre, a remarkable institution dedicated to helping children with cancer.

The goal is to raise $100,000 to train an in-house Apheresis Clinical Nurse Consultant who will provide life-saving treatments. While it’s a significant sum, this support can make a profound difference for many children, offering them not just a chance at life but a brighter future.

Monash Children's Hospital already has the equipment, facilities and medical expertise to provide Apheresis Therapy to our young patients, but the key is in the in-house Apheresis Clinical Nurse Consultant to unlock the delivery of the program. Apheresis therapy will also be a vital part of delivering personalised "Precision medicine", which is the future of cancer treatment. That future isn't far away, and providing this specialised nursing role now will equip Monash Children's Hospital for many years to come.

Please help us fund a specialist Apheresis Nurse to improve the quality of care and survival chances for children with high-risk cancers.
