President's Ramblings
What a great turnout we have at our last meeting with guest speaker Neil Lucas. Neil is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to the history of the Berwick area. We were enlightened with history of some of the people behind the names of a number of local streets including our very own Funston family. We also learned about the connection with the Neville Shute book ‘On the beach’ with part of the movie being filmed in Berwick. We also discovered that there is so much more that Neil could tell us about, so we’re so to have him back again in the future. When we have guest speakers like Neil with such broad appeal it’s a great opportunity to invite other Rotary clubs along on the night. Thanks to our friends from the Rotary Club of Casey for visiting us for Neil’s presentation.

After returning from a trip to Colombia to visit her mother, Diana Gomez-Fullaway presented us with a banner from the Rotary Club of Cali in district 4281 where she visited during her trip and presented them with one of our banners.

Anzac Day

Of course this week we also had Anzac Day. Once again a group of Berwick members made the pre-dawn trip to Bunjil Place to assist the Rotary Club of Narre Warren with their ‘Gun Fire’ breakfast. Following the dawn service, the breakfast caters for around 200 people for a sit down breakfast as well as the serving of some 300 sausages to those outside.  Rotary Club of Berwick members assisted with setup, cooking, foodservice and cleanup.

Following the breakfast, Michele and I laid a wreath on behalf of the club at the Berwick Cenotaph, before attending the Berwick March. It was great to see our own veteran Andy Merrill participating in the march, and a mention in the speeches for Gary Cooper as one of those local veterans who had passed away since the last Anzac Day.

Lest We Forget

64th Birthday Progressive Dinner

We have no regular meeting next week (April 30th) due to our progressive dinner on Saturday May 3rd. Isobel has the proceeding well in hand. Bookings have closed and those who have booked will be receiving details during the week.

It’s also election day so don’t forget to vote.

In the Coming Weeks

On May 7th, our guest speaker is incoming International Inner Wheel President, Kay Morland. As part of the lead up to her year as president, Kay attended the United Nations in New York. She will be telling all about her visit and Inner Wheel’s role at the UN.

Also don’t forget the Inner Wheel club of Berwick Trivia Night Fundraiser in support of “All For Billie” on Friday May 9th. Please see the flyer later in the bulletin and consider putting together a table of family and friends to support this great cause.

Berwick College Presentation Balls

The Presentation Balls this year are now only a couple of weeks away on May 14th and 15th.
We are still looking for club members each night to attend and help out with the running of the event. It’s always a great night, so why not jump on board.

Cheers,
Andrew

DG Partner Project Fundraising

This year, Leanne Byron’s 2024-2025 Rotary District Governor Partner Project is raising funds to support the Monash Children's Cancer Centre, a remarkable institution dedicated to helping children with cancer.

The goal is to raise $100,000 to train an in-house Apheresis Clinical Nurse Consultant who will provide life-saving treatments. While it’s a significant sum, this support can make a profound difference for many children, offering them not just a chance at life but a brighter future.

Monash Children's Hospital already has the equipment, facilities and medical expertise to provide Apheresis Therapy to our young patients, but the key is in the in-house Apheresis Clinical Nurse Consultant to unlock the delivery of the program. Apheresis therapy will also be a vital part of delivering personalised "Precision medicine", which is the future of cancer treatment. That future isn't far away, and providing this specialised nursing role now will equip Monash Children's Hospital for many years to come.

Please help us fund a specialist Apheresis Nurse to improve the quality of care and survival chances for children with high-risk cancers.
