Who are We - The Rotary Club of Berwick?

Come along and join us as we pose these age old questions and indulge in some competitive fun activities as we explore amd reward the answers.

This week we are holding our dual Annual General Meetings:

• Rotary Club of Berwick Inc
• Rotary Berwick and District Benevolent Society.

President PDG Tim will also be talking to us about next years's big event - The International Rotary Convention - right here in Melbourne.

Tonight Eric and Wendy Boon will share their journey with the International Skiing Fellowship of Rotarians (ISFR)

Guest Speaker:  David Dippie - PP Rotary Club of Keilor and PE RC Keilor East

Born in Scotland, arrived in Australia 1957, lives in Essendon, married with three adult children and two grandchildren.

Business background; building construction - from Home Improvements to City High-rise, with a significant involvement in Marketing and Franchising        

Started and ran his own business; The Skylight Shop which he sold after 12 years and has been retired for several years.

Joined the Rotary Club of Keilor District 9800 in 1993 and was President 2004-5.

David helps to manage the Donations In Kind Store, is Co-Chair of the D9800 Environmental Sustainability Committee and is a member of the Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group Oceania Chapter executive responsible for Project coordination and promotion.

He has made several trips to Timor Leste, some with members of our Club.

In August, he went to Tonga as a member of a 14-person RAWCS team. The project was the installation of dental chairs and facilities, which is similar to our involvement in the Balibo and Solomon Islands dental health and oral hygiene projects. David will reflect on this project and Rotary in Tonga.

Please note that the Rotary Club of Berwick is a full financial member of Rotary Donations in Kind (DIK), one of the very few in District 9820. David is our "Go To" person for all our activities through DIK. He is a wealth of knowledge on supplying overseas projects with equipment and goods as well as the many other aspects surrounding repurposing used equipment for other countries and local projects.

Tonight our guest speaker will be Kerri Bolch, Principal of Berwick Secondary College.

Our club has had a longe association with Berwick Scecondary College through our running of the Presentation Balls.

This is a chance for us to learn more about the school and explore further opportunities for engagement with this important part of our local community.

This will also be our last regular meeting for 2022. 

After a brief interruption due to Coivd, the tradition continues once more and all club members are invited to the summer BBQ at the Kraan's.

Welcome back in 2023

Tonight our guests are the outgoing and incoming Executive Officers of Casey North Community Information & Support Services (CNCISS).

Our club has had a long association with CNCISS through the Rotary Berwick and District Benevolent Society where we have regularly supported them with financial contributions and of course the annual Christmas Collection in conjunction with local schools.

This week our guest speaker is our very own weather-man, Gus Dominguez.

Come along to hear a bit about how the Bureau of Meteorology operates, how they forecast the weather

and ask Gus all those curly weather questions you have always wanted to ask.

It’s that time again, when we are able to get our next ‘travel fix’.

Once again, tonight we are travelling close to home and exploring some of our own magnificent country! 

Make sure you bring along your partner, family and friends to enjoy ‘travelling’ to some iconic Australian destinations. 

This month, we are going to board The Ghan and join Geoff and Di Double on their journey through the Northern Territory.

Tourism is an important economic driver for the territory and a significant industry in regional areas.

Iconic destinations such as Uluru and Kakadu and towns such as Alice Springs, Katherine and Darwin, make the

Northern Territory a popular destination for domestic and international travellers. 

Diverse landscapes, stunning waterfalls, picturesque wide open spaces, aboriginal culture and wild and untamed wildlife

provides the opportunity for visitors to immerse themselves in the natural wonder that the Northern Territory offers.

This organisation is located in James Street, Dandenong and provides support to people in need within the local community. 

Over a million Aussies step up to clean up our parks and public spaces every year, donating their time to improve the environment. This is our chance to join one million other Aussies to show the Rotary cares about our community and gets down and dirty to deliver at least one clean park in our wonderful city!

Cleaning up a small piece of Berwick gives a little self-satisfaction for one day and there is nothing wrong with that. Rotary can do way more than that, so join us at Buchanan Park to talk about the many other ways that Rotary can be a positive force in the community (while we are picking up rubbish of course!).

You don't even have to be a Rotarian to join in! We are happy to have anyone who wants to give back to the community to join in and enjoy a morning chatting while we get to work.

The Narre Warren club has a great project supporting the relief efforts in Tonga that they will be presenting to us.

Berwick is hosting this year’s event at Berwick Bowling Club Manuka Rd Berwick

To get in some practice arrive at 6.30

Tournament begins at 7.00 followed by meal, presentations, fun and frivolity etc

Dinner is catered for by the Inner Wheel Club of Berwick

$35 will get you a game of bowls and a meal

No prior experience required - just come along and have some fun

Bowls will be provided if you don’t have your own and volunteers will be on hand to tutor those that require

Monbulk have outplayed us for a few years now so if anyone has a friend that bowls bring them along to bolster our ranks

Rae held the role of Latrobe Valley Mine Rehabilitation Commissioner from June 2017 to June 2020 before becoming the Chair of the Mine Land Rehabilitation Authority Board. Rae has extensive mine rehabilitation related expertise, with more than 40 years’ experience as a practising engineer, hydrogeologist and academic.

Rehabilitation of the Latrobe Valley Brown Coal Mine: the story so far.

The Inquiry arising from the Hazelwood Mine Fire in 2014 identified mine rehabilitation and the lack of appropriate frameworks for rehabilitation as significant issues for the Latrobe valley mines and for the region.  Recommendations were made on a way forward in terms of policy and legislation that have been rolled out over the last 5 years.  This has been set against a backdrop of early power station closures that have occurred (Hazelwood) and have been brought forward significantly (Yallourn and Loy Yang).  This presentation will give a brief snapshot of the key issues and the current status of rehabilitation planning for the Valley.

This week we will be having a guest spoeaker from the Black Dog Institute

Adam Ritzinger is a mechanical engineer who has worked in the trucking industry since graduating in the early 2000s. He is a Melbourne resident but has lived and worked extensively around the globe, including Europe and South East Asia. He is a devoted family man and father who lives with his partner, their two young girls, and the family's two miniature sausage dogs. Adam's lived experience with mental illness includes depression and anxiety, which he experienced in his late 20s and early 30s. Overcoming those challenges, and assisting others in the community to do the same, is what drives Adam to volunteer for the Black Dog Institute. 

Following the tragic loss and injury of Defence Personnel in Afghanistan in 2010, Harkaway local, Helen Comport, learnt of the need to reach out to wounded ADF personnel and honour their sacrifice for serving Australia on a combat deployment. The quilt, made to wrap veteran or Defence personnel, was such a powerful symbol in a traumatic time that it felt like an important issue that Australia should become involved in.

Helen learnt how touched her son was when he received a quilt made by Americans following critical injuries he sustained in Afghanistan. Following this tragedy, Helen decided to set up an Australian group to recognise veterans and Defence Personnel touched by war by presenting them withquilts. 

Tonight we will hear Helen’s Quilt’s of Valour Australian story.
